Don't listen to loud music, don't use Q-tips to clean your ears, and read the following article to maintain your hearing. If you find yourself near a sporting goods merchant, go in and purchase a pair of earplugs. On your next day off, leave them in your ears for a while. You'll soon discover that even simple tasks are harder to perform when your hearing is restricted. Merely having a discussion is very difficult. You can forget about listening to your mp3 player or watching television. You won't even be able to hear normal sounds in your home, such as doors shutting, timers ringing, or the air conditioner coming on. This is called 'auditory isolation' - but most people can prevent this from happening. There are two basic types of hearing loss, first of all conductive loss means sounds are not being conducted or getting through to the inner ear, this is where the interpretation of sound occurs. The second type of hearing loss is called sensorineural hearing loss, where the sound is able to make it through to the inner ear, but somehow isn't interpreted correctly when it gets there. Generally, this happens due to damaged fibers within the ear, the brain, or the nerves that are concerned with hearing. When people have this kind of hearing loss they often end up having tinnitus, which is a buzzing/ringing noise that will occur either intermittently or all the time. An audiologist or a doctor will be able to tell which kind of hearing loss you have by examining your previous medical issues and your ears. If conductive hearing loss is discovered, clearing it up can sometimes be as easy as dislodging a wax buildup, or can be as complex as otosclerosis surgery to the tiny bones in the middle ear. However, if the problem is sensorineural loss the treatment could be as simple as a digital hearing aid, which often works quite well in certain patients, to cochlear implants for someone who has definite inner ear complications. Take advantage of this information and remember which sort of things can create ear problems for you. These hints spell out Sound Sensory Overload. If you find yourself yelling over any type of noise in the background for someone else to hear you, the sound either needs to be turned down or you should be wearing some type of protection on your ears. Many adults who were teethed on loud rock n roll are now wishing that they'd turned down their record players. Many baby boomers are struggling with hearing loss now. There are many people who didn't use ear protection while shooting a gun or serving near cannons and other loud artillery in the military who now suffer from hearing loss. For people who have walked about with undiagnosed tumors or infections that went untreated and uncared for, they now have hearing damage and loss that cannot be corrected in their advanced age. The rate of hearing impairment in 55-year-olds is 20 percent. Although that number increases to 33 percent by the time a person in 65, the impairment, fortunately, does not generally result in profound hearing loss. Some people who experience hearing issues in just one ear could be suffering from an acoustic neuroma, which is a non-cancerous tumor that targets the nerve responsible for hearing. This diagnosis usually starts out small and unnoticed, but later total deafness or other hearing conditions can arise. When this occurs, the only possible treatment is surgical. Many people seem to constantly suffer from chronic ear infections, especially those in the middle-ear. Others have been exposed and succumbed to mumps, measles, meningitis and scarlet fever. These conditions can later cause hearing loss, and should be discussed with your doctor. Another cause of hearing loss are the bones within the ear canal not functioning properly or anything that can block the ear canal itself and prevent the flow of sound. I have witnessed people who roughly insert Q-tips into their ears in an attempt to get rid of wax. However, they are really doing just the opposite by forcing it further into the ear. Cotton swabs are okay to use if they are employed gently. Speak to a doctor if you are uncertain about proper usage. On occasion, the bones in the middle ear harden, or liquid from an allergy or infection accumulates. Aside from this, many people compromise their hearing with trauma, or drug use. But even when people have been careful, there can damage from prescription medications. Some antibiotics, heart anti-arrythmia medicines, and treatment for malaria can all destroy hearing. Even just swallowing a harmless aspirin can cause irreversible damage to your hearing. There are many different types of trauma that can ultimately damage hearing including skull fractures, trauma due to close proximity to gunfire or fireworks, and pressure trauma due to underwater diving or even pressurized airplane cabins.
