Tablets have proved quite popular during the last year or so and the iPad tablet has a lot of competitors these days. While tablets are quite good when you're on the go, they're not always a good choice when it comes to work. If you want to play and work on the same device, you might want to take a look at the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 which is a convertible tablet laptop. The screen of the ThinkPad X220 is a 12.5 inch model, a capacitive screen of very good quality. As far as design goes, you get a feeling that it's made to be useful. It's not a trendy model, it's actually a bit industrial, with its black lines and angles, but it does the job well and that's what matters. The battery does give the X220 a bit of a bulge if you pick the model with eight cells, but the device is still comfortable to hold when it's in tablet mode. The tablet has the regular finish found on ThinkPad models, which is a bit soft, giving it a rugged and ergonomic feel. As for the interior of the device, it has a bezel which is a bit soft, making it easier to use when it's in tablet mode. The rest of it has a matt plastic, black in color. The quality of the build overall is a very good one and the model feels solid in your hands. The specs of the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 tablet are very good and it's powered by the Sandy Bridge architecture from Intel, which was created with mobility in mind. The processor on this model varies from the cheaper Core i3-2310M, going to the Core i5-2520M which runs at 2.5GHz and the top choice is the Core i7-2620M quad core CPU. The processor is powerful enough to allow the tablet to run most applications without any problems, but it will depend on which of the models you choose. If you want to do encoding of HD videos, the most powerful processor would be a better choice. There is a bit of a downside in the fact that there are no dedicated graphics on this model, just the Intel HD 3000, which is still superior to other solutions available from Intel in this department. The specs are complete by 4GB of RAM, which you can boost to 8GB if needed. As for the storage, you have a choice between SSDs of 160GB or HDD of 320GB and 7200 RPM. The OS on the X220 is Windows 7. The X220 can be used as a tablet, but it's not the perfect experience. Like all hybrid devices, some compromises have to be made if you want both worlds in a single device. The transformation into a tablet is done through a hinge, which feels solid and smooth. In tablet mode you can use either a stylus or capacitive touch, which feels responsive and easy to use. You also get multi-touch or gestures, but they're not as well polished as they are on regular tablets.
