Leadership Training in Dubai

By: Maureen Mc Phearson

According to a recent study of CEO’s and Entrepreneurs in the Middle East Region, professionals in Dubai and other GCC cities have a limited number of choices available to them when it comes to high quality leadership training programs. Department and section heads, managers, senior supervisors, team leaders, and others who need to develop their managerial and leadership skills have only a limited number of programs to choose from. Whether your business is large or small, leadership training and skills are shown to be one of the core elements of company success.

Is it true that good leaders are made, not born? If you have the desire and will power, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, mentoring, and experience. This should be supported by a structured training and education platform where you can benefit from the real world experience of others.

So what is leadership? Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. It’s that simple on paper, but the skills, techniques and experience required to do it effectively, take a lifetime to master.

Of course, a lot of leadership training is focused on effective communication. The ability to communicate effectively with employees and customers when dealing with and solving problems is an invaluable skill. Much more is required however, of a well trained and effective leader. What about key negotiation skills? Conflict resolution? Effective HR processes? It is clear that there is no one leadership training program that will enable you to be an effective leader. With the Dubai and GCC market becoming more competitive for businesses, and the resulting after effect of the global downturn, leadership training in Dubai is booming. It used to be that Dubai would import expatriate skills from abroad to run business concerns, but with a growing local population of educated and senior Emirati and GCC business people the tables are starting to turn. Dubai is now exporting its own products, services and solutions to the global market. Running a global company requires global leadership skills, and businesses in Dubai and the GCC are getting wise to the fact that the best leadership education is garnered over a period of time in a multi disciplined environment.

Everyone knows that it is important to attend training seminars and other conferences where you can increase your knowledge base. By interfacing with leaders from other businesses, you'll learn new ways of approaching issues and opportunities, and be able to find other people who have the same problems you face. Leadership Skills that are available in Dubai can address the situational decisions leaders need to make on a day to day basis. These are based on expertise and experience and of-course, natural management ability. However, many companies in Dubai and the GCC are now focusing on how they build and develop strategic thinking skills for leaders at every level of the organization. Quite simply, leadership is defined as the one key cornerstone that can make all of the other elements of a business come together.

So what is the process you should follow to inject the relevant skills and capabilities both into your portfolio and day to day management style? Well there are a large number of things a dedicated student of leadership in Dubai should be doing.

1)Find a mentor – Finding a mentor that you both respect and look up to in terms of leadership style is a great way to learn. Every company has a mentor lurking somewhere. Ask people in the organization who they would choose if they had to have a leadership mentor, just to ensure your thoughts are validated amongst your peers.

2)Talk to people. If you haven’t read Dales Carnegies “How to win friends and influence people” then this would be a good starting point. By simply listening to people, understanding issues and helping address them, you will find nuggets of leadership embedded within everyone that you meet.

3)Structure an external training course. You have lots of opportunity within your company to learn from the people that work there. In fact you shouldn’t have to wait for a training course to find out and talk to your peers. Structuring an external training course to focus on your weak points allows you to openly discuss the issues and learn from other businesses and people in other types of company.

4)Read, Read, Read – Read everything you can get your hands on. If it looks good then read it; ask for book suggestions from your peers. If you don’t have a penchant for reading then I would suggest listening to audio books, on your way to work, on the way home and for an hour in the evening should allow you to consume one volume of pure information and experience each day.

5)Learn from your mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up if you make a mistake as it is part of the learning experience. Discuss it with your mentor and the others around you; learn from it and don’t make the same mistake again.

6)Business networks also provide you with a good opportunity for learning and development; you will also discover a wealth of connections, opportunities and talent for you to learn from.

There are a number of organizations and training companies in the UAE, located both in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which provide structured leadership training for the individual and for companies wishing to develop leaders. Speak to other executives and ask them where they have received effective training, search for “leadership training in Dubai” on the internet and if you can’t find the relevant education try to search out a specialist or even engage in private tutoring.
