Most late-season toms belong to the sad bachelor club because most hens have been mated, making available hens harder to call in. With just over a week to go in the 2009 Kansas Spring turkey season, now may be the time to harvest that big tom. That nervous tom can be just as responsive to a well-placed hen turkey decoy and turkey call as he might have been when the early spring Turkey season kicked off. While it's true that late-season toms can be wary from having been shot at, in isolated areas, gobblers may may not have felt as much pressure as you think. Those that have beenpushed may still come to the persistent hunter who is persistent and patient. Sitting tight and laying off the calls can add up to success. Low clucks lightly used may be the most effective in late turkey season. Turkey Hunters who have not harvested a gobbler this spring, or those who still have a turkey tag to fill, shouldn't give up. The crappie will still be there once that bird is in the bag. In the state of Kansas the 2009 spring turkey hunting season runs through May 31. Turkey tags allow hunters to use either a shotgun or a bow.
