Knowing Your Exclusions When Purchasing Travel Insurance

By: Raphael Stare nP

Travel insurance can be extremely valuable, especially with trip cancellation insurance coverage and medical coverage. However, every policy has set exclusions that will prevent a payout in certain circumstances. Knowing these exclusions is essential to buying a protective policy that will operate as expected.

Most policies have a fairly similar set of exclusions. A trip cancellation insurance policy will often exclude payment for cancellations resulting from preexisting medical conditions, especially if these conditions are not disclosed to the insurer. If a policy holder has an illness that could reasonably result in cancellation, for instance cancer, a heart condition or anything else that is been identified and diagnosed, the insurance company will reason that it should not have to pay, since the condition increased the chances of a cancellation. Likewise, medical bills will not be covered under the medical portion of a travel insurance policy if an undisclosed preexisting condition has been identified under most common circumstances.

However, this does not mean that buyers will not be able to find a policy that covers preexisting conditions. Many insurers offer special policies for ill travelers, but these policies are likely to be more expensive and may come saddled with additional exclusions related to the treatment of the condition.

Likewise, a cancellation that is a direct result of the policy holder actions might not be covered. Cancellations due to suicide are often excluded. Voluntary cancellation is also excluded for obvious reasons. Soldiers who have to cancel trips due to deployment or for other military reasons may also find their claims denied, again depending on the insurer and the individual travel insurance policy.

A good rule of thumb for travelers is that if there are any circumstances which make a cancellation likely, they likely will not be covered. A travel insurance policy is there to pay for unexpected or unforeseen circumstances, and the detailed exclusions section of a policy is intended to root out all predictable circumstances. Always read over the exclusions and keep this in mind before planning a trip or buying a travel insurance policy.
