Know the Risks and Know Your Rights

By: Greg Reynolds

Women have been taking second generation oral contraceptives for many years now and have lived with the slight risks of blood clots and blockage of the blood vessels. What most are informed of when at the clinic is that there is a risk for potentially serious side effects, especially to those that are over 35, over weight, and those that smoke. But the risk was relatively low. However, while the newest third generation contraceptive called Nuvaring also tote the same warning labels, they do not mention that there is a significantly higher risk to women who use them than the second generation products.

In fact, medical testing has proven that there is a double chance that women will get life threatening side effects like blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, and even strokes. And what is particularly a common issue with this drug is when there is a clot in the leg that causes thrombophlebitis as well as a clot that can travel to your lungs. Furthermore, a link has been found between these issues and the kinds of synthetic hormones found in the new drug. But what exactly is Nuvaring?

This ‘revolutionary’ new contraceptive has combined hormonal ingredients. The ring itself is made of polyethylene vinyl acetate, and is 2 inches in diameter. The woman wears this ring in the vagina for about three weeks and then takes it out for one week. What it contains is a combination of the hormones estrogen, and a synthetic version of progestin that will become slowly released into the bloodstream. While the second generation birth control methods also contained hormones, they differ in the specific progestin components that are used in the Nuvaring.

Furthermore, from one generation of birth control to the next, it has been the goal to decrease or even eliminate the side effects of the medication. For example, the first generation oral contraceptives had a fairly high level of blood clot issues found. The second generation birth control then worked to decrease these problems. And although they did succeed in reducing the risks of those side effects, they had a few new ones to add like acne and increased hair growth. When the third generation contraceptives were being developed, it was with the main goal of decreasing these new side effects. However, what has been the result is an increase of what the first generation contraceptives had seen.

Not only are there severe risks of blood clots and stroke, but those risks have now doubled. What medical researchers have found is that the most likely element causing the problems is a synthetic version of progestin called desogestrel. It is said that this particular drug causes resistance to an important coagulant protein, which in turn will make it easier for your body to form blood clots. So what form of birth control do you use?
