King And Queen Size Bed Dimensions: A How-to Shopping Guide

By: Laci Thorton

If you're looking to upgrade the size of your bed, there is much to take into account. The comfort provided by king and queen size bed dimensions is considerable, but is it right for you? It is very tempting to get a bigger bed, especially when you realize that the larger sizes are only a bit more expensive than a full size bed.

In North American standards, a queen size bed is 5 feet by 6 feet, 8 inches. Keep in mind that a full size bed is 4 feet, 6 inches by 6 feet, 3 inches. This is marginally smaller than a queen size. Is this the upgrade you want?

Though the difference sounds like a great deal, you will be surprised when you see the mattresses side by side; a queen is not very much bigger at all. Have the salesperson measure out the size of a full mattress on a queen mattress. You will then have to decide if the span of a few fingers in either direction is worth the cost of the 'bigger' mattress.

The king mattress, however, lives up to its name. It is a great deal larger, being 6 feet, 6 inches across and 6 feet, 8 inches long! That is ample space for any couple, and perhaps too much space for a single person.

There is one footnote about king size beds, however. Stores also offer something called the super king or California king mattress. These beds are 6 feet across by 7 feet long. Very tall people are grateful for these mattresses, but for a person of average height, these beds are superfluous, especially considering how hard it is to find sheets for them.

There are other space considerations: namely, the space you will have left if your bedroom if you buy a king size mattress. Will you be able to maneuver freely? If not, is the bed still worth it? And if you buy a king size mattress, what box spring situation would you prefer, one large box spring or two smaller ones?

The last, and perhaps least important, thing to consider is the effect a new bed will have upon your relationship, if you share a bed with someone. Some argue that a couple who sleeps closer together is closer together in life. The same relationship occurs when a couple gets a bigger bed and sleeps farther apart. While this may not make or break your decision for a bigger bed, it is a large purchase and is important to discuss with your partner.
