Is a Percentage Matching Bonus or Deposit Matching Bonus Better?

By: Roberto Garabell

Upon first glance, these two bonus types might sound about the same to players since in either case the online casino is matching the deposit with a deposit bonus. The difference is in the way that they structure the bonus and there can be different terms and conditions attached to it. You need to understand the differences between the bonuses in order to get a feel for what type of bonus may work out better for you.

A percentage matching bonus is the type of bonus you will see advertised as "100% deposit matching up to $50". With this type of bonus, there is always a cap on it and in order to determine whether it's worth your while, you need to do the calculations and see exactly how much money you will get out of your deposit. You always want to evaluate every bonus to ensure that you are getting the best possible offer and get the most money for the size of the deposit that you're making.

With a deposit matching bonus, they provide you with a flat amount on top of your deposit. So, for example, they may advertise that you get "$100 when you deposit $100". In theory, there is a limit on how much money you get here too; it's just a different way of reading the bonus. This indicates that for each $100 you deposit, you get $100 of deposit bonus. In a way, this bonus can be less generous, because if you were to deposit $150 you would still only get $100. Whereas, with the percentage bonus, they match dollar per dollar up to the limit. But, if you were comparing both examples used in this article, this bonus would be the better offer since you can get substantially more money. Often with these bonuses they do work out to be higher if you are making a big deposit because the limit is based on getting an amount when you deposit an amount, and not necessarily a total.

You may think that the benefit of playing at an online casino is that all the math is done for you, but if you want to best evaluate an available bonus the best bet is to do the math based on the deposit amount you're intending and see what kind of offer you can get. Don't be swayed to deposit more than you're comfortable with any casino bonus, however, you don't want to go over your budget or you'll find that a bonus is not to your benefit after all!
