Introducing the Taxi-Limo

By: Salman Anwar

As Internet competition for airport fares heats up, limousine drivers around the world, convinced that consumers will be happy if they choose to ride with them, have been passing themselves off as airport taxis. This phenomenon is especially prevelent on the Internet, where a search for an airport taxi driver will turn up listings of companies that, within the fine print, are offering rides in town cars, limousines and even stretch limousines.

The amazing part of this phenomenon is that the limo drivers, claiming that they are offering a superior service at a cheaper price, are actually speaking the truth. And this fact, inflames the passions of the limo internet aficionados even more, as they strive ceaselessly to avoid losing business to taxi drivers who they believe are offering inferior service at the same or even higher price than they are.

So what are the facts? Many urban airports have set tariffs for taxis and limousines. In each case, the limo ride goes for a flat fee, which is a few bucks more than the corresponding taxi ride. However, in many metro cities, rides to the airport are not governed by the tariff. As limo drivers passionately point out, when taxis take fares to the airport, they flip on their meter, and subsequently charge for time as well as distance. When the taxi gets stuck in city traffic or the mid-morning highway commuter traffic, the meter price keeps rising as the duration of the trip increases, and in the end the inferior taxi ride may cost more than the limo ride.

One Toronto limo driver, who founded Toronto Town Car Plus provided me with some
statistics. First, he told me, he offers a flat fare price for airport rides. { When he
takes fares from Mississauga, a town in the suburbs of Toronto, to the airport, his flat fare
price from a part of town close to the airport, is $35. With a Taxi, however, the
corresponding fare starts at $35 on a good day, but when the cab is held up in traffic that
minimum price can quickly rise to as high as $42. |From Mississauga, a town on the
expressway to the airport, his cheapest prices starts at $35 A taxi, he said, also charges
$35, for the equivalent distance, but in heavy traffic, with long delays, the taxi minimum
price can range up to $42 dollars. }From Oakville, his flat price ranges from $50-
$55. A taxi price, especially during slow moving commuter traffic can run from $55-$65.
From Burlington, he said, his prices ranges from $60-$75 dollars. An airport taxi fare
from Burlington, during rush hour, may range from $65-$85. Burlington, Oakville and
Mississauga are all along the same expressway that connects their cities to Toronto
Pearson airport. So riders from all three cities are delayed during rush hour.

{ Salman the limo driver concluded passionately that customers get less luggage
space with taxis, less leg room, and a bumpier ride. For the same price or less, customer
can get more trunk space, a large interior, and the benefits of gps guided navigation which
only a portion of the cabs currently are equipped with, but all limousines have. |With a
taxi, Salman adds passionately, you get less luggage space. With a limo, you get larger
interior, smoother ride, plus the benefits of gps guided navigation so the driver never has
to ask the customer for directions.}

In some cities, where the cost of rides to the airport are not governed by airport tariff regulations limousines are able to provide less expensive rides than taxis, while still providing the limo luxury. In these cities limo owners anxious to take advantage of the loophole, describe their vehicles, online, as taxis, hence the phrase "taxi-limo."
