Internet Marketing - A Fresh Look

By: Brent Thomason

So Exactly what is internet marketing? Internet marketing is applying the internet as a resource to research a product(s), then researching that product(s) competitors. Then based on that research using the internet as a marketing, and or advertising tool to advertise and sale a specific product, or establish a list of potential customers or sales leads for the sale of a future product, products, and or services.
Simply put, internet marketers are folks or teams focusing on and specializing in using the internet with their combined talents and expertise to research and locate a product to promote which have the potential of the highest potential of sale conversions to promote, then create the most amount of exposure that will create the maximum amount of sales revenue with the least amount of resources.

Selecting the product:
In the businessof internet marketing, choosing the right product(s) to market, promote, and sale is the key. Especially as a beginning internet marketer, you will have almost immediate failure if you target a niche that is flooded such as insurance, credit card offers, real estate, or mortgage lead generation. You also likely to fail if you target a product or service that has very little interest for example if you were trying to market, promote and sale an E-Book on how to cook roaches.

There are many software products on the market that help internet marketers find, sift through, research, and decide on best selling products that they can use, and make excellent money off of. Since many products at some point have a tendency to die off, and or become flooded with marketers, true internet marketers are very skilled at the process of locating products, and are continually on the hunt for great products to they can promote and sale.

If you are considering following the path of an internet marketer that will be researching, and selecting multiple products and niches to promote, then you should consider this when doing your research. Even in the old days before the internet, large marketing organizations would put up thousands of dollars in detailed research just to decide if a given product was worth putting the time, effort, and resources into promoting it. Many times big marketing firms would spend all this time and financial resources in research simply to decide not to engage in the promotion of a given product. So as you can see product selection must be viewed as a main factor in the internet marketer's plan, and not be taken lightly.

Advertising
A simple example of just pure advertising would be a TV commercial that just taunts the best things about say a large bank. The intent of that commercial is predominintely brand building or name recognition, and not necessarily to land a customer or sale on the spot. In other words, when that large bank runs that television commercial, they most likely will not have have someone sitting by the phone waiting on a huge rush of immediate phone calls to come in immediately after the commercial airs.

Most companies utilize many different forms of advertising such as TV, newspaper and magazine articles, classified ads in newspapers, radio, co-op and direct coupon mail outs, and phone directory advertising. Successful internet marketers realize that it is really no different for them, and over time have created, and have in place and ready to use many different avenues for obtaining massive amounts of online exposure at their fingertips most of which requires very littlemoney if any at all.

Marketing
An example of just plain marketing was in the old days with the telemarketers. The telemarketers for the most part were mainly a lead generator, some of them did close sales, but with many groups such as mortgage, insurance, or service oriented companies companies, were lead generators. In these instances, the telemarketer was truely marketing because they essentially were not really making calls to just build a brand name. The telemarketer's role was mostly to grab a lead that they considered through some level of interest to be a strong potential buying customer, and turn it over to a sales department to close a deal or make a sale.

Plain marketing from an internet marketer's point of view for example would be a plain internet form that is utilized to get a potential buyer's contact information. For example, if you saw a small ad on a website that says "Make $400.00 perweek online", using a simple form asking for your name and email address, that would be a form of just marketing. The internet marketer is just looking for potential customers to add to a list of folks that have some interest in making money online.

Keep all of this in mind when you are putting together marketing campaigns. In older days, thousands of dollars were spent on professional writers to develop the best telemarketing pitch, and if you were ever unlucky enough to have worked for any of these telemarketing companies, you know that most of them required that you followed this script to the T. Most of these scripts were looked at as corporate knowledge that many telemarketing firms protected almost as being secret formulas. So yes you should, spend adequate time and effort in developing a initial pitch you plan to use for that initial email blast or ad or what ever method you utilize for your initial exposure.

Advertising / Marketing:
Both marketing and advertising often share the same space in a lot of situations, and typically sales will stand alone. For example, in many big company?s, you will have a advertising and marketing division that is separate from the sales division. The marketing and advertising division essentially develops advertising and marketing campaigns together to create new leads for the sales division.

Now let's look at a situation of when the line turns grey differentiating between marketing and advertising is with campaigns such as with a postcard mail out. If the piece that the company mails out just had the company's name on it, and what they did but with no phone numbers, address, or contact information on it, that would be just pure advertising, and not necessarily a specific form of marketing or lead generation piece. In many cases, advertising and marketing roll in together. For example, if you see a form on a web site that says "Make $100.00 per day online" along with the brand name Steve?s Internet Marketing School, and a place to submit your name and email address that would be an good example of advertising (Lead generation or list building) and marketing (brand name building) both together.

Sales
After introducing a product, and creating a sales lead, you want someone that is a strong sales person or closer that can close the deal and actually get the customer to pull the checkbook or credit card out, and close the deal. In many instances with internet marketers, the sale is made online with the typical buy now button. Many times for large product launches, hundreds and thousands of dollars are used in creating the perfect sales page to insure maximum level of sales every time the page is seen. Consider this when creating your own sales page(s). This is where you would must be wearing your sales hat. Quite often this is the last chance you will have at making this sale. Many times after the potential buyer closes that page, their gone for good.

In Conclusion
Essentially the internet can be utilized as a lead generation tool or marketing tool, an advertising tool just for name brand promotion, a virtual salesman or all together. Look at it this way, If you have a web site that introduces your firm, and on the same page has a form to fill out or a phone number to call for a interested customer to contact you, then you are using that web site as both a brand name building and advertising piece for brand name building and name recognition, and also as a lead generation marketing piece. And if you have a buy now button on that same page where the visitor can buy the product right then in real time, that one page has become an advertising piece, a marketing piece, and a salesperson all in one.

Successful internet marketers over time have developed, acquired, and honed the skills needed to inexpensively reach thousands of targeted potential buyers, present advertising, marketing, and sales pages to those prospects in such a way as to get the highest levels of response that closes sales, or gets some desired response from a web site visitor. These are the talents that have positioned true internet marketers in today's world to work when and wherever they want to work, and make the kind of money they do.

These skills have not been mastered overnight, but built on by a relentless collection of knowledge, and acquired marketing resources that have catapulted them into the absolute best positions any entrepreneur could ever ask to be in. The journey is definetly an investment of time and minimal money that can be started on a shoe string budget, and pay for itself along the way.

One of the best bits of advice I ever received was to begin by reviewing all the internet money making systems around, set a budget which for me then was around four hundred dollars, start purchasing the systems, completely implement and learn everything I could from each system. Once I had purchased and implemented my budgets worth of various systems, I stopped spending until the systems I had put in place had made the money from my budget back. This was excellent advice. All of the systems paid for them selves over time supplying me with a huge amount of knowledge and resources, and looking back I wish I would have set my budget higher, and jumped up the ladder a little faster.
