Improving Curb Appeal

By: searchrankpros1

The “curb appeal” of a house is its exterior – the part that makes an initial impression on a potential buyer. Bad curb appeal can immediately put somebody off a house before they set foot inside, see the lawn or even hear the asking price! Many people drive past houses they are interested in before arranging a viewing; bad curb appeal can go so far as to actually dissuade such people from pursuing their interest any further than a glance from the road!

To the same extent, good curb appeal can lure people in who may not have even been interested before! A buyer that may be struggling to make a decision about an area may find their mind is made up for them by something as simple as a beautiful-looking house! For this reason, improving and maintaining the curb appeal of your house is of great importance – especially if you are looking to sell!

There are many factors that affect curb appeal – too many to list and cover in this article. Instead, I shall focus on a just a couple of common factors that can have a major impact on curb appeal; lawns and garage doors.
Although superficial, the tidiness of a lawn can go a long way in affecting the overall look and feel of a property. Not only does an unkempt lawn mean a lot of extra work for a buyer, it also suggests an overall disregard for the property that may leave a potential buyer wondering what other aspects of the house have been left to fall into disrepair. Conversely, a neat and tidy lawn suggests the presence of an energetic and dedicated owner and a well looked-after property, which is immediately more attractive to a buyer. It doesn’t take a lot of work to make the lawn look much nicer; rake up fallen leaves, tidy away garden tools and cut the grass for starters.

For added impact spend a few extra hours digging up weeds, cutting back hedges and, if you have a patio or any decking, hire a pressure-washer to blast away any mould and dirt.
The garage door also has a massive impact on curb appeal; considering the size of most garages, the door alone can actually make up a large part of the entire exterior of a house! Hence, a well-maintained, high-quality and nicely styled garage door can add literally thousands of pounds to the value of a house – as a recent survey into price-estimations of three thousand houses has shown. In the same way that a badly tended garden can suggest a lax approach to the upkeep of the house; a damaged, rotten or otherwise deteriorating garage door suggests that other parts of the house may be in a similar condition.

However, it is not just the physical condition of a garage door that can affect the impact it has on the curb value of a house, but the style of the door as well. Most houses have some kind of theme – be it modern, traditional or experimental – and good garage doors compliment this theme, rather than clash with it! The appropriate style of garage door will vary hugely with the theme of your house’s exterior and it is well worth investing some time and money into making sure you pick the right kind of door to improve the look of your house.

A neat lawn and a high-quality, suitably styled garage door will do wonders for the curb appeal of your house. A lick of paint and a spot of window-cleaning and your house will be massively more attractive to potential buyers.
