If You Are In Denial about Exercise - Expect a Backlash

By: Gen Wright

They say you are only as young as you feel, but if you do not do enough vigorous activity you will not feel very young no matter what your age. As we go through our busy modern day lives it is easy to put off getting around to starting a proper exercise program.

But as the years slip by your body isn't just frozen in time waiting for you to get moving, it is heading in a downward spiral of accelerated aging. The very dangerous threesome of denial, pride and laziness will always be followed up by some unwanted consequence to your health.

It is surprising that many people view exercise as an ‘optional' extra. But if they are fully aware of what happens to the human body without it they may not be so keen to avoid it.
If we decide not to make time to maintain our strength and fitness, the consequences may not be obvious in the short term. It could be tempting to engage in wishful thinking and say to yourself: "If I don't work out, nobody is going to know the difference?" And that may be true, but only for a while.

It takes time, years, even decades for a lack of proper physical activity to take its toll on our bodies. For starters your muscles if not used and kept strong will diminish and become soft, weak and flabby. Muscle is just the beginning; the bones they are attached to will also become weaker and more brittle and your posture will take on an aged look.

Joints deteriorate without strong muscles to support and cushion them and become stiff, painful and easily injured. Daily tasks and activities will start to become harder so you start to avoid them and further accelerate the downward spiral.

The loss of muscle tissue is usually accompanied by an increase in body fat putting extra strain on all systems including the heart which grows weak and scrawny from disuse. The increased body fat changes the balance of fats in the blood leading to heart attack and stroke and alters sugar metabolism increasing the risk of obesity and diabetes.

Inactivity also affects the brain, your mental stability, your moods, your anxiety and stress levels. Your career will suffer, you will likely experience chronic fatigue and loss of self esteem. All in all not a pretty picture and unless you start to take an active role and change this situation these problems will only get worse.

Recent research proves that it isn't age that brings about the above conditions – it is a life without enough physical activity to keep one strong and vital. If muscle strength is not used on a regular, vigorous and ongoing basis you will lose it – it is really that simple. This is an extremely high price tag to pay for a sedentary or inactive lifestyle.

If you're in a panic now because you're 40, 50, or 60 or even older and you have not been exercising properly, don't worry because here's the good news: it is NEVER EVER too late; you don't have to let this "disuse" syndrome effect you.
