IT’s a good move Working in an office today – and in various other workplaces – demands at least a basic level of IT skills. No employer wants to take the time to provide employees with skills that they should already have. So not having those basics in place could rule you out of the running if you’re looking for a different career. People are always changing jobs, of course, but today’s economic environment might be a particularly good time to do so. If you’re currently working in an industry that’s been hard hit by the credit crunch, you might want to take this opportunity to bring your IT skills up to speed. So what is the best way to do this? If you’re already employed or have family commitments, attending a school, college or other educational establishment full time might be difficult or impossible. But there is an alternative: distance learning courses. Distance learning courses are attractive to many people because they allow you to study at your own pace and at your own time. Courses can often take as long as you want – although you’ll probably want to complete your course in a reasonable time to make the most use of your new skill set. A long train or plane journey can be wasted hours: alternatively, you can use that time in study. This might be a very good moment to consider making IT your new career. There are many job opportunities for people with IT qualifications, including help desk technicians, graphic designers, web developers, e-commerce managers, project managers and more. Let’s face it, computers are never going to go out of style – so working directly with them might be a great career move. There are many different kinds of IT courses, depending on what area you want to pursue. You can even start with no direct experience of IT, as long as you have enthusiasm and are keen to learn. IT courses offered by a good distant learning course provider will come complete with full tutorial support and assessment of your progress. They will also send you all the course materials you need. You’ll be able to submit your work by post or email, and work towards an industry-recognised qualification without having to give up your current job. Already in an IT role? Then you could take an IT course to develop your skills in different areas, perhaps those required for your next step up the promotion ladder. Many employers would be impressed by your initiative and self-development; and if yours happens not to be, you could show your newly improved CV to those who are.
