IT’S A NEW DAY IN THE STEEL BUILDING INDUSTRY AGAIN

By: John Barber

Long passed are the days when steel building sellers could dictate the prices and terms of the selling process. The abrupt economic change has had a positive effect on the metal building industry. Those good old days are over for brokers of prefabricated steel buildings wherein they said and did almost anything they liked and reaped large economic gains with seemingly little consequences. Like all other industries, this industry is now conforming to the buyer’s needs and desired prices. Customers are now able to shop the market and dictate how much they wish to pay and when they intend to buy. It was not uncommon in the 80’, 90’s and early 2000 that all sorts of questionable sales gimmicks were used to lure a client into a sale. Even if a client sensed things were not totally on the “up and up”, they often went along since the marketing presentations were similar from almost all the re-sellers. More and more people are getting fair deals and receiving quality metal buildings within six to eight weeks.

When the market shrunk, many unethical companies had to pack up and leave because customers began scrutinizing each company a lot more. There was a time when sellers felt so comfortable that they had the gall to not send out a contract until they had received a deposit. And there were a host of customers who obliged the sellers and proceeded unprotected. Customers are checking references and thoroughly reviewing contracts before they commit to a purchase. Like any industry, the companies whose reputations were unblemished are the ones still standing after the storm. This has created a vastly different selling dynamic. Customers are now being listened to. They don’t have to hear as much “…someone just ordered a steel building and was unable to proceed with purchase, so we will sell it for only…….” as much. It was not uncommon to hear of stories where a customer had placed a deposit on a building and never ever received the building. Honesty has returned again to the industry! That does not mean that there are not a few bad apples, but there are definitely fewer.

The principles that have stood the test of time are now what govern a company’s success:

• Quality
• Price
• Service

More and more companies are offering online shopping or at least listing their prices so that a customer can research far more extensively on their own. We are proud to state that our prices are easily visible on our website, www.priceabuilding.com. Online shopping was only offered by one company in the 90’s. I believe this will be commonplace within the next seven to ten years.
