During hot humid months sweaty toilet tanks can be a real problem for homeowners. Drops of condensation collect on the surface of the porcelain tank, and during the course of a hot and humid summer's day, combine to form a sizeable and noxious puddle of water, capable of causing discernable damage to bathroom tiles and wood flooring. Toilet sweating occurs when warm moist air hits cold toilet porcelain. The air temperature rapidly falls below the dew point, and water in the air condenses on the surface of the tank. The colder the water main and the larger the tank surface area, the more exagerated the sweating. Repeated flushing, causes frequent influx of cold water and thereby heightens the problem. A number of solutions are offered for alleviating toilet sweating, only some of which really work. In any case, before homeowners test out some of these solutions, they should be sure to check their toilet flapper valve. If the flapper valve doesn't close properly, water level in the tank will continually drop, the intake valve will remain open, and there will be a continual flow of cold main water into the tank. The constant influx of cold water will prevent the surface temperature from rising above the dew point, and this will mean continual condensation and sweating. DYI homeowners can try insulating the tank themself. The tank is first emptied and carefully dried. Then foam insulation is cut to size and glued to the inner walls of the tank. Seams must be tight. Householders can also add insulation by replacing the current tank with a tank that comes with a premade lining. Unfortunately, insulation generally only helps a bit. After multiple toilet flushes, cold tap water temperatures will equilibrate through the foam to the procelain and sweating will commence. Several solutions for a sweaty toilet really do work. Homeowners can purchase a tempering, (anti-sweat), valve for the toilet. This value is applied behind the toilet and will mix in a predetermined amount of hot water to the water entering the toilet. The valve can be adjusted so that the temperature of water in the tank will be above the dew point, and therefore no sweating will occur. This is the most expensive albeit most effective solution. This solution is, however, problematical in houses where the hot water intake is a long distance from the toilet. In such homes, the hot water has to be run at full strength to work, and this can be costly. Another solution is to run an air conditioner or dehumidifier in the area. The device selected must run all the time to be effective. Additional solutions include installing a small table fan or else a bathroom exhaust fan to remove the moist air. In homes with a forced air heating system, with a register in the bathroom, homeowners can open the register fully and turn on the furnace fan to circulate air out of the bathroom. A third solution, is to purchase a compressed air, (pressure assisted), toilet. These toilets flush the bowl with only .5 liters of water. They may cost $260 or more to install in a pre-existing tank but users report they are 100% effective in preventing toilet sweating. Other less effective solutions include use of a fury tank cover; or window covers, which reduce overheating in the bathroom because of sunlight. It has also been reported that low flow toilet are less likely to sweat. The low flow toilets only flush a portion of the water in the tank. The remaining water therefore has longer to equilibrate with room air temperature, and subsequently rise above the dew point temperature. Perhaps the least expensive solution is to purchase a toilet drip catcher. The device is installed under the toilet tank and will divert dripping water to a pan placed on the floor. With several working solutions, homeowners needn't suffer anymore from sweaty toilet tanks in the bathroom.

During the hot sticky summer months, porcelain toilet tanks containing cold water from the main can cause moisture in the air to precipitate and then drip on the floor. In houses with wood flooring the puddles of water forming under the tank can cause substantial damage. But now, there are several effective solutions to this problem, which are available to the homeowner.
