How To Apply Concrete Stains to the Floor

By: Gen Wright

Applying stain to a concrete floor is a good thing to do if you want your floor to stay protected and maintenance free for a long time to come. It is actually very easy to apply stains on an existing floor but only if you have not moved all your furniture in already. Thus applying stains to a new and empty apartment is easy enough. But it may be more difficult for those who want to stain the floors of the place they live in.

The main problem comes from the fact that it is easier to work on a bare floor with nothing to stop you from covering the entire floor in one go. But with furniture on top, you need to move out all the furniture to empty the floor space. This is not an easy task and sometimes it will be impossible to move all the furniture out of your home and back in again.

So, what you have to do is plan properly and apply the stain one room at a time. This way, you can move the furniture into another room while you are staining the floor and then once that room is done, you move all the furniture back in and start on another room. This will take up more time but it will be done without having to move the furniture outside your home. If you have a small apartment, you can try moving the furniture to one side of the room and apply the stain one side at a time.

Another area to consider carefully is the drying time. This will determine how much time you will need for the entire process to finish. Modern quick drying stains can easily complete your staining and sealing project in two to three days. However, if you use traditional stains that take much longer to dry, your completion date can get pushed back by two or three more days. Other than the added delay, it can also end up costing you more if you are renting storage space for your furniture.

Next, calculate the floor-area you are going to stain and then estimate the amount of stain and sealer that you will require. Buy slightly more than the calculated amount so that you do not run out while working.

Once you have taken care of all these preliminary problems, you can focus on getting the right tools for the job. You will need special brushes for applying the stain and some clean rags to clean up after the application. For applying the sealer, you will only need to have spraying equipment. To know more about your choices and to make sure you get the right tools, ask the store owner or the salesmen present at the shop. You can also look for tips and sellers online.

Once you have applied the first coat, survey the work and determine whether there are gaps and patches. If you see that the first coat is inadequate, apply a second coat.
