How Do I Go About Looking For A Job?

By: Alison Gayle Weir-Smith

There are many ways of looking for a job. Recruitment agencies and other businesses advertise vacancies online with various job posting websites as well as in newspapers. Before you apply for all these positions, you first need to do a few things.

The first thing you need to do is decide what you want to be earning. This is done by calculating your current expenses and adding on a bit to allow for entertainment. Alternatively, you could add about ten to twenty percent onto your current salary. Any more than that, and companies will think you are greedy and overvaluing yourself. You also need to decide what kind of job you are looking for and what areas you are willing to travel to.

The next step is to write a CV. This document presents a picture of yourself to the people reading your CV. It should include your personal details, including your residential area and mode of transport. Do not forget to put you contact details into this section. You can include a picture of yourself if you like, but if you do, it should be a professional picture, not a photo of you clowning around dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. You CV should also include an educational profile detailing every course, degree, certificate and diploma you have completed. It is often a good idea to also include your High School details as many companies require a matric. Next, your CV should give the details of your employment history. This section should start from the most recent to the earliest. Include everything you can remember, even holiday jobs and waitressing or promotions jobs. This last is important if you have never had any formal employment experience as it shows that you are willing to work hard. It is also a good idea to include a skills matrix showing what computer programmes you are capable of handling and how much experience you have had on each one. The last section of you CV is your reference list. Make sure that you have at least one professional reference (someone you have worked for) so that potential employers can verify your character and experience. Be careful not to include anyone who might have something bad to say about you. Companies are very hesitant to employ people who have bad references.

Now that you have a CV, you can start applying to jobs. Search online or in newspapers for jobs that you meet the criteria for. You will seldom be considered for a job if you do not have the experience and qualifications they are looking for. Apply be forwarding a covering letter and your CV to the address or fax number given. Your covering letter should tell the reader a bit about you experience and qualifications without repeating your CV.

From there on it is up to the person on the other end of the line to contact you for interviews and further information. If you have done things properly, these calls should not be long in coming.
