The arrival of David Beckham at the Los Angeles Galaxy side a couple of years in the past may not have given a great deal success for the club itself, however it has positively raised the profile of the "beautiful game" in America. Beckham and Posh brought together the VIP superstar society and the upper echelons of the soccer world in a way that had by no means been seen before in the USA. Previous to his appearance (in fact even at this point), the best American footballers could only daydream of making a small part of the vast figures bandied about when Beckham's overall remuneration are mentioned But still, he appears to have had the desired impact of raising the sport at grassroots level, as well as in the movie star world. This was emphasised by the gigantic crowds on show when Chelsea, AC Milan and Inter Milan appeared in the States for a pre-season competition. Every match was played in front of a sell-out multitude. I seem to recall over 100,000 being at one match concerning Chelsea, dwarfing the records seen at pre-season games even in England. The growth in the attractiveness of "soccer" has also seen a growth in the blogs and fan-sites appearing in the States, and a few have caught my eye recently as they appear to have a entirely unlike method of looking at football than the English natives. Maybe we should change it to "soccer" too, it might change our attitudes! I mostly love the weirdly named Amongthethugs (a allusion to a hardback by American author Bill Bruford about English hooligans from the nineties i suppose, although it is not referred to on the site). This is a site set up by six West Coast soccer fans, who between them support five different English clubs, furthermore they own a delightfully amusing viewpoint on the soccer world in Britain. Nobody is safe from their jibes and i observe myself habitually checking back to observe who their jibes are aimed at next. They did recently asked why Carlo Ancelotti would deliberately throw a contest against Wigan which i found quite comical, and they projected a new eye protection for Van Persie to put on when he next faces Adebayor. Another article that delighted me is the likeness of Carlos Tevez to a Caveman! You have to see them to get the jokes, so go over and have a peep. You will not be let down. The good-natured ribbing of the sides supported by the other bloggers is something you absolutely don't get in mad old England! If you are into soccer and like a guffaw, check it out, you won't be disappointed with AmongTheThugs. So you can spot that the "David Beckham effect" has had a much further reaching effect on the American football scene than everyone had anticipated. While he may well have been making obscenely extreme earnings, he has had the desired effect of enticing more and more "soccer" supporters to matches than has ever been seen previously. And the American view of "soccer" is perhaps something that I would like to see exported to Britain, as the fans here just seem to take everything much too seriously!
