Hosting a memorable Murder Mystery party

By: Bryan Hallett

We’ve all been to a friends' house for dinner and talked endlessly about the weather, or politics or the best place to dine out. Once the washing up is done everyone is pretty much ready to be making excuses to leave and a few days later the party is forgotten.

Well, there is a solution to this. Why not host a murder mystery party, with each of your guests playing a role to unfold a dastardly and deadly plot over the dinner table? If you have the sort of friends who enjoy a laugh and enjoy a mental challenge, this is just the sort of thing that will intrigue and amuse them, and make you a host to remember.

Organizing such a party need not be difficult and they can be suited to all ages from teenagers to senior citizens. The Internet is full of resources to get you started, as any Google search for “murder mystery” will prove. So, where to start?

To start, look at your list of guests. Are they fun people? Probably, that's why they are your friends. But perhaps some of them are wallflowers and some like to be in the thick of the action. Provided you have, six of the latter, you can find a thrilling murder story that will entertain everyone... even your more shy and retiring companions.

Next think of a theme. You could go for the hackneyed route of Agatha Christie type mysteries, but why stop there? You could set your mystery any time or any place: a spooky castle, a space craft, a hockey game or the French Revolution. Be inventive and use your venue and interests as a starting point. Put together a short list of ideas and see what resources are out there to make your ideas fly.

There are in reality three options available to you now: do it yourself, buy a box, or call up the experts. Which you chose will depend on how much time and money you have, but there will be an option that will suit your circumstances.

Firstly, you could do the whole thing yourself, but this is hard work and you may not have the skills to undertake it if you've never hosted such a party before.

If you don't have the time, then why not order a kit that does everything for you? You can buy pre-boxed games or download packs that have invites, character profiles and cue cards ready made for you All you need to worry about is inviting your friends, as many come with a DVD to conduct the evening perfectly, and are ideal for those who have not hosted a murder mystery party before. Being pre-written, these stories may not match your elaborate ideas, but you should be able to find something that everyone will enjoy.

Lastly, consider hiring someone to write your own scenario, and perhaps book them to bring along some outrageous mystery performers. Again there are many options for you here, as a Google search for “murder mystery evening” will make obvious. This may be the most expensive option, but you have everything done for you, are guaranteed an event that runs like clockwork and can often specify precisely what sort of party you want. Such companies are experienced at creating a special event for you and fun and hilarity is assured. So now you have many possible ideas, what are you waiting for?
