Home-Study Multimedia CBT PC Certification Training For IT Networking & Security Uncovered

By: Katie Anne Harriss

CompTIA A+ consists of 2 training sections; you're considered A+ competent when you've passed the test for both specialist areas. Passing the A+ exam by itself will mean that you're able to fix and maintain stand-alone PC's and MAC's; ones which are usually not part of a network - this generally applies to home use and small companies. Should you decide to add Network+ to your A+ course, you'll additionally be equipped to look after networks, which means you'll be able to apply for more senior positions.

Look at the points below and pay great regard to them if you think that old marketing ploy of an 'Exam Guarantee' sounds great value:

Obviously it's not free - you're still paying for it - it's just been included in your package price. The fact is that if a student pays for their own exams, when they're ready to take them and not before, they will be much more likely to qualify each time - since they'll be conscious of what they've paid and therefore will put more effort into their preparation.

Does it really add up to pay your college early for exams? Hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, instead of paying any mark-up - and do it locally - rather than possibly hours away from your area. Paying in advance for exams (which also includes interest if you've taken out a loan) is insane. It's not your job to boost the training company's account with your hard-earned cash just to give them a good cash-flow! A lot bank on the fact that you won't get round to taking them - but they won't refund the cash. Re-takes of any failed exams through training course providers who offer an 'Exam Guarantee' are always heavily controlled. You'll be required to sit pre-tests to make sure they think you're going to pass.

With the average price of Pro-metric and VUE tests coming in at around 112 pounds in the UK, the most cost-effective way to cover the cost is by paying when you need them. It's not in the student's interests to fork out hundreds or thousands of pounds for exams when enrolling on a course. Consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

A service that many training companies provide is a Job Placement Assistance program. This is designed to help you get your first commercial position. With the great skills shortage in the UK right now, it's not necessary to place too much emphasis on this feature however. It's not as difficult as you may be led to believe to get employment as long as you've got the necessary skills and qualifications.

Update your CV at the beginning of your training though - look to your training company for advice on how to do this. Don't put it off until you've qualified. You'll often find that you'll secure your initial job whilst you're still studying (sometimes when you've only just got going). If your course details aren't on your CV (and it hasn't been posted on jobsites) then you're not even going to be known about! Most often, a local IT focused employment agency (who will, of course, be keen to place you to receive their commission) should get better results than any division of a training company. It also stands to reason that they'll be familiar with the local industry and employment needs.

A good number of men and women, it seems, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (for years sometimes), and then just stop instead of looking for a job. Sell yourself... Work hard to get yourself known. A job isn't just going to bump into you.

The CompTIA A+ training program covers two modules of training; you're considered an achiever in A+ when you've achieved certifications for both of these areas. As well as being taught about the ins and outs of building and maintaining computers, students on an A+ training course will be taught how to work in antistatic conditions, as well as diagnostics, fault-finding and remote access. If you feel it appropriate to add Network+ to your A+ course, you'll also learn how to assist with or manage ...
