The first SUV type vehicles were actually descendents from military and commercial vehicles that were used during World War II such as the Land Rover and Jeep. Many people that lived in rural areas liked the off-road capabilities of this type of vehicle and they were very popular with this rural crowd for many years. Along the years there were many examples of SUV type vehicles starting from as early as the 1930s with the Chevrolet Carryall Suburban and the GAZ-61. The 1940s and 50s brought us Willys Jeep Wagon and the Land Rover series. The first so-called modern SUV came about in the 1960s with the Jeep Wagoneer. The Beginning of an Era In the 60s, when it can be claimed that the era of the SUV began, we also were introduced to the Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Blazer, and the Toyota Land Cruiser. By this time the SUV style was slowly but surely integrating into society because of its many features and handling capabilities. According to many experts the Jeep Cherokee was actually the first true sport utility vehicle because it was the first to market this type of vehicle to urban families. Their marketing efforts seized on the idea of substituting the traditional family vehicle with a four-wheel drive vehicle that featured the plush interior of a station wagon. Selling more luxurious models that featured a powerful, but efficient 4 liter engine because of a drop in gasoline prices led to an overwhelming success. With the success of the Jeep Cherokee the whole industry started to reinvent itself. And the term "sport utility vehicle" was born. In response to the popularity of the Jeep Cherokee, the SUV boom began. Other automakers started marketing their own versions of the popular Cherokee that was taking sales away from their regular cars. The SUV is similar to the pickup truck, except it was engineered to transport passengers instead of goods and materials through climates and terrain where ordinary passenger vehicles could not tread. Once the SUV became increasingly popular many of the styles and designs of the station wagon and sedans where integrated in the SUV. In many respects the SUVs started becoming very similar to a car and largely helped replace the minivan because of its comfort and style. The SUV mission has remained the same over the years, and that is: taking people places that aren't so easily accessible. You can still carry the whole family and not worry about getting stuck in the mud at an outdoor gathering.
