Hiking Paths in Vanuatu

By: Drago Bubic

For those who enjoy mountains and volcanoes, hiking in Vanuatu offers you all the sights and experience that you could want. Hiking on Vanuatu islands is an incredible way to get off the beaten path and enjoy traditional culture, incredible hospitality and some of the most amazing views of the islands and the surrounding ocean. The most common two places for hiking are actually two of the most popular volcanic islands - Ambrym and Tanna.

Hiking on Ambrym island

As many volcano tourists know, Ambrym is one of the most popular places for hiking. Ambrym island offers four volcano tracks from the north, east, southwest, and west. The easiest path in terms of hiking difficulty is considered to be the northern path from Raventlam, although no path is considered to be extremely difficult. Still, regardless of which hiking path you choose, you can plan to take at least four to seven hours for your tour. In many cases, you can plan that a hike in Vanuatu will take longer than that and can be broken up into a multiple day trip.

Another great attraction of Ambrym island are forest-covered mountains. There are two peaks, Mount Tovuo and Tower Peak, which both offer an incredible view of the island. On clear days, you can also see surrounding Vanuatu islands from the top of the mountains.

Hiking on Tanna island

One of the most popular holidays destinations in Vanuatu, Tanna is also popular hiking place. It is the home of Mount Yasur, Vanuatu's most active volcano. In addition to being the most active, Mount Yasur is also one of the most accessible volcanoes in the world. You may never get a chance to hike up the volcano while it rumbles and watch the wind push the molten bombs over your head, unless you hike on Mount Yasur. On most nights, the volcano offers a fireworks show for all of Tanna to see.

Prepare to Hike in Vanuatu

To prepare for your hikes in Vanuatu, you should wear warmer clothing and closed-toe shoes. In the event that it rains while you are on your hike, you should also bring some plastic bags to store your camera and personal belongs. If you are planning an overnight trip, you will also want to have a sleeping bag, tent, and drinking water.

There is one thing that every tourist will agree upon and that is if you are making the trip to Vanuatu, you have to take the time to hike up one of the volcanoes, especially Mount Yasur. If hiking is not your domain or you don't have that much time on your Vanuatu holiday, there are 4WD tours that go up the volcanoes as well, which provides you with the same views in a shorter period of time.
