Lots of small colleges aspire to be alike. Hendrix, is seems, wants to be different. And, different it is. At a time in which it sometimes appears that thinking out of the box is no longer valued and civil discourse has gone the way of the steam engine, Hendrix strongly encourages students to engage in individual thinking, debate with each other, and openly consider new ideas. In fact, the College website says, "We believe it's important to challenge conventional wisdom and our own assumptions. If you disagree, if you think some things just shouldn't be questioned, you might not be happy at Hendrix." The Odyssey program, which requires students to become engaged in at least three hands-on learning experiences during their undergraduate years, also sets Hendrix apart. Hendrix enrolls about 1,100 students from 33 states and nine countries. Hendrix is probably the most selective college or university in Arkansas. About half it's students ranked in the top ten percent of their high school classes, three quarters were in the top quarter, and their midrange ACT composite scores were 25-31. It's student to faculty ratio is 11 to 1, and virtually all faculty hold PhD's or equivalent degrees. Hendrix's endowment of more than $190 million is the envy of many colleges its size. Hendrix is priced below many comparable institutions. Further good news is the fact that the average Hendrix student receives a financial aid package equivalent to about half the cost of tuition, room, board, and fees. If being introduced to new kinds of people and new ideas appeals to you, if you like the idea of doing some learning outside of the traditional classroom, and if you want to share small classes with capable, motivated students, you should find out more about Hendrix.
