This is one of those conditions which if we're truthful we do not want to mention let alone talk in detail however, it is one that affects almost certainly 50% of the population of over fifty yr olds. This condition can often be a short lived occurrence, although for others it can be an extremely debilitating and ongoing condition. What are Hemorrhoids? Well, inside the anus there is a spongy layer called Mucosal Cushions which are soft and very vascular and when areas of these cushions become enlarged and the blood vessels swell they are called Hemorrhoids. The next query is what are the symptoms of Hemorrhoids? There are a number of symptoms which you may suffer with. You hopefully will not suffer from all of them or all at the same point but they are the usual ones. Anal itching and discomfort, bleeding after you have gone to the loo or an anal lump which might be engorged and tender on the outer edge of your anus. You might feel pain whilst passing your stools. You might have anal discharge of liquid/mucous or slime and often, you will feel as though your bowels aren't empty after passing a stool. An additional awkward and unsightly problem is stool marks in your underwear. Hemorrhoids home treatment would include a healthy life style schedule of a fibre rich diet, exercise, careful use of medicinal creams and pain relief. This lifestyle can only be adopted after seeing your GP to get your suspected diagnosis confirmed. It is not prudent however embarrassed you may feel not to have your condition checked by your GP. Lots of more serious conditions such as bowel cancer have been missed owing to shyness. I am often asked how to treat haemorrhoids and that is hard to respond to as treatment for bleeding haemorrhoids is different to that of thrombosed haemorrhoid treatment. External haemorrhoid treatment for thrombosis will probably involve a trip to the doctors as it can be exceptionally painful plus you will need to have the clot evacuated, while bleeding haemorrhoids may just require pressure. Hemorrhoids are graded and if you have persistent problems you may require hemorrhoid surgery and that can be as diverse as haemorrhoids laser treatment to haemorrhoidectomy or the up and coming treatment Doppler-Guided Hemorrhoidal Artery Ligation or the tried and tested Hemorrhoid banding. The choice is varied although you need to make sure that the person doing your procedure is competent. You don't want to be somebody’s guinea pig. Lexi Reade
