Have You Always Desired Whiter Teeth?

By: Shaune Humphreyz

Many different things can cause teeth to turn from white to dull over time. Teeth can become discolored as a result of many substances, including tea, coffee, red wine, dark cola, curry, and cigarettes. This can greatly discolor your teeth when esposure lasts over time.

You may however simply be born with teeth that are not naturally as white as you may wish. There are natural causes as well, such as aging. Fortunately, you have the power to add years of youthful beauty to your smile by simply whitening your teeth.

For those who have discolored teeth, or those who would like to smile just a little more brightly, tooth whitening will inevitably enter into your thoughts. However, are whitening options safe to use? While numerous studies have been conducted over the years regarding teeth whitening procedures, not a single credible report has linked any carcinogenic effects with these options.

The professionals use a product with 10% carbamide peroxide which is 3% hydrogen peroxide. An oxidation process that eliminates the build up of organic coloring and chromogens from the teeth is how they are whitened. This results in whiter looking teeth.

Clinical studies conducted throughout the years have validated how safely and efficiently the process is. This does not give carte blanche to the patients who use it. As with any product, you should follow the instructions carefully.

It is not recommended to be used on white teeth. These people will not see dramatic results and so would be better off spending their money elsewhere. It is also not recommended if patients have many white fillings or crowns or bridges on the front teeth because theses will not change in colour.

Dentists recommend whitening before any restorative work done. If you have had work done on teeth that are not visible when you smile then using teeth whitening will be fine. It is not advised to undergo teeth whitening if you are pregnant or lactating.

A health professional should do any teeth whitening procedures, so that the patient can be properly advised on what to expect from the treatment. Furthermore, the dentist molds custom trays for each patient that will place the whitening gel exactly where it is needed. By using these trays, no amount of the whitening gel is accidentally swallowed.

Your mouth will be cleaned to remove any build up of tarter to make sure the mold fits perfectly over your teeth and the dentist can judge what results you can expect, if any. Once you and your dentist have agreed that you will go ahead with the whitening process, an impression will be taken of your upper and lower teeth. This is done with a special substance that is placed in a mold against your teeth until it sets in place.

The dental impressions will be sent to a special dental lab where they will be used to cast a replica of your teeth. From these they will fabricate trays from a plastic material. Finally they will then be returned to the dental office.

Your dentist will instruct you about using them properly and exactly how the kit should be used. Simply squirt the whitening gel from the pre-filled syringes as the dentist recommends onto the trays and press them onto your teeth before sleeping. Remove the trays in the morning and brush accordingly, the process repeats until the desired level of whitening has been reached.
