The original HTC Touch was dubbed the Windows version of the Apple iPhone. However, it never really lived up to the hype, as iPhone sales surpassed the Touch by huge margins. Recently, though, HTC is back with a brand new Touch phone, the HTC Touch-Cruise. It looks much better than the original, performs much better, has more features than its Apple competitor – but does it have what it takes to be successful? The HTC Touch-Cruise is a quad band GSM phone, so it can be used anywhere in the world. Furthermore, HTC pulled out all the stops and included tri band UMTS support – so you can even access the 3G wireless data network no matter where you are on the globe. This is a huge step above the iPhone which is limited to either the American or the European market and is still not 3G capable. As far as size and weight go, the HTC Touch-Cruise is big. Measuring in at over four inches by two and a half inches by a half an inch, you’ll definitely feel this in your pocket. Furthermore, the 130 grams of weight may make the HTC Touch-Cruise a better fit for your briefcase than your wallet. Amazingly enough, the battery in the HTC Touch-Cruise is actually somewhat respectable. Expect to get approximately seven hours of talk time or 400 hours of standby time from a single charge. The real bread and butter of the HTC Touch-Cruise is the screen. It’s not nearly as impressive as the one on the iPhone (not by a long shot), but it gets the job done. Able to display 240 by 320 pixels and 65k colors, the 2.8-inch touch screen is about the same size as the one you would find on a T-Mobile Sidekick. Other features include an impressive 3.0 megapixel camera with an additional camera for video calls, a media player for music and video, an FM radio, a microSD slot for expandable memory, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 support, and a variety of phonebook related features. Moreover, Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional powers it all. Pros - Better design than the previous HTC Touch - Decent battery life - Lots of great features - 3G support and WiFi Cons - Steep price Overall The HTC Touch-Cruise is essentially the business version of the Apple iPhone. It’s like HTC sucked all of the fun features from the iPhone and left this corporation friendly device behind. If you can get it for free from your office, definitely go for the HTC Touch-Cruise. Otherwise, stick with the iPhone for a much better user experience.
