Graphic Artist Asks for Photo and Personality of Pet

By: Anderson Topp

A graphic artist feels little faces watching her whenever she works at home. As she uses up most of the time at home for various kinds of work, she feels a lack of enthusiasm in what she is doing. Through a screened door watched four dogs and four cats.

This graphic artist suddenly realized a different career was waiting for her when she saw those faces. She was headed for Texas when she decided to put the images of her animals on canvas. Not just still lifes but portraits of green dogs and purple cats, using the kinds of colors seen on an animal but the colors she feels through their personalities.

She makes it her goal to capture the essence of the animal when she paints. Using the different colors and knowing the animal's personality can help me recreate it in my painting. The pioneer painting was that of a dog which she and her husband found while in Mississippi. This dog, whose color was red, was always with the couple.

Because her dog was jealous, she decided to pain him green. She's not a pioneer in animal portraits done with nonconventional colors. A red eyed blue dog was the painting that one cajun artist made in 1984 in commemoration of his dog who died in 1980.

The blue dog attracts attention in her paintings. While people may find a certain playfulness in the blue dog paintings, there is actually a serious and darker side in how the artist views the paintings. Each of the paintings, though quite humorous on the outside, actually have deep spiritual messages embedded in them. The dog stares at us and asks us the same questions humankind has been asking since our existence.

She desires that the very essence of the animal's life be found in the art. She selects colors that are vibrant and odd patterns to capture how they act. These animals were all alone before she came and rescued them. She also adopted a dog, the newest in the family, who was wandering from one house to another in the neighborhood.

She marketed her pet portraits by going into local veterinarian offices and leaving fliers. Clients are requested to provide photos and descriptions of their animals' personalities, she says. The colors are determined by her understanding of the animal. There is something that the customers find in the portraits, a store owner said.

Her energetic personality was captured with they yellow paint. An art gallery owner stresses that even whimsical portraits have this way of capturing people who know the subjects. Looking at a portrait and appreciating it are two different things.
