Google Adwords Overview

By: Verne Eliasov

Google adwords is Google’s chief advertising product, and key foundation of revenue. Google adwords offer pay per click, or PPC, advertising, and website targeted advertising for both text and banner ads. Google’s adwords program includes local, national and international distribution. Google’s text advertisements are kept very brief, only consisting of one title line and two content text lines.

Google adwords works by having advertisers indicate which words should be used to trigger their ads, and the highest amount they are willing to pay per click. When someone makes use of Google’s search engine, relevant words are shown as ‘sponsored links’ on the right side of the page, or are sometimes even displayed above the main results. This allows websites to instantly reach their market without having to invest the time and money in getting their website within the first 10 search results by using search engine optimization techniques, yet protect the integrity of the search results from advertiser influenced results. The order in which the paid for listing that appear next to the search results will have depends greatly on the other advertisers’ pay per click bids and the quality score of all ads shown for a given search. Quality score is determined by past click through rates, relevance of an advertiser’s ad text and keywords, the advertiser’s account history, and other relevant aspects as determined by Google. The quality score is also used by Google to determine the minimum bid for an advertiser’s keywords. The quality of the landing page is also taken into consideration with the minimum bid, which includes the relevancy and originality of content, user friendly navigability and simplicity and clearness of the business. Google has supplied a full list of guiding principles for sites as to the course of action to follow to rank high on the paid for listings, but the exact procedure and meaning of significance and its designation is in part secret to Google and the stricture used can change dramatically.

Google introduced site targeted advertising in late 2003. By utilizing the adwords control panel, advertisers can enter keywords, domain names, topics and demographic targeting predilection and Google places the ads on what is regard as applicable sites within their content network. Should domain names be targeted, Google also supplies a list of associated sites for placement. Advertisers have the options of choosing between the cost per impression or cost per click basis for site targeting. With placement targeting, it is quite possible for an ad to take up the whole ad block instead of having to share the ad block, resulting in greater visibility for the advertiser. All adwords are qualified to be displayed on Google’s main search site as well as on the pages of various websites that elected to show Google Ads. Ads are shown in context to the different searches performed in the Google search engine as well as in the context of the website page on which the ad is displayed.

Constant headway is being achieved in revolutionizing search engine marketing, and products such as Google adwords are only growing in popularity. There is no slowing down in this industry in the near future.
