Golden Retrievers - A Favourite Breed Of Dog

By: John Philips

Many people who wish to own a dog exhibit a preference for Golden Retrievers. As pets they are the favorite breed for many people, but they are also great obedience competitors, show dogs and hunting companions. Golden Retrievers make excellent dogs and whatever grounds you have for wanting to own one you will not be disappointed with your decision.

As far as intelligence, ease of training, affection and loyalty go Golden Retrievers are one of the top breeds and make excellent friends due to their well mannered disposition. Although they are loyal, affectionate and ideal mates for children they will bark out loud if anything is out of the ordinary, making them excellent watchdogs. Golden Retrievers will return all affection you show them, especially if treated as important part of the family group.

No matter how many times you brush them, Golden Retrievers shed their hair constantly, particularly in the spring when they discard their winter coat. Brushing and combing them daily is a necessity, paying particular attention to the dense undercoat. This is of the utmost importance because the health and quality of a Golden Retriever can be assessed by his coat.

They are very similar to Labradors in their liking for water and will need no excuse to get wet. Once the novelty of this initial amusement wears off it can get a bit frustrating when taking a wet Golden Retriever home after their workout. So expect to end up with either a wet or muddy dog as a regular event when owning a Golden Retriever.

Once you have got your Golden Retriever it is important to pay considerable attention to his daily needs. What he needs most is the emotional maintenance that comes from being with his owner and family and being treated as an integral part of the family group. Ignoring his active nature and powerful physique can lead to behaviour problems, and he needs daily physical and mental exercise.

Admiration and attention are vital for a Golden Retriever and long periods of loneliness are not ideal. A busy life or long periods away from home are not an ideal environment for a Golden Retriever and a another breed of dog should be considered. A family environment is the best situation for a Golden Retriever, especially as they constantly need attention and need to be around you at all times.

Raising a Golden Retriever from a puppy, instead of acquiring an adult dog, is a favourite of most people, believing the puppy will grow up with the skills they have taught it. However, owning a puppy can exhaust a lot of your time and may result in frustration at times. If you easily get disheartened or can't spare the time you should consider getting an older dog. A Golden Retriever that is already house trained and schooled would be more suitable alternative.

If you are searching for a breed of dog that offers companionship, Golden Retrievers are a first-rate option. They are capable and more than willing to join in several activities and pastimes. You will have a loyal and affectionate friend for life if you include you Golden Retriever in everything you are involved in.
