Getting Plastic Surgery In Mexico

By: Jen Quintarin

Who in their right brain would go down to Mexico for plastic surgery? After all, is not it a 3rd world country? Mexico is not precisely a first world nation, but, at least in its metropolitan areas, it's not a third world country.

It is also the location of a fine medical school at the University of Guadalajara, where many American students get their medical degrees. Guadalajara is also the place of the prestigious Institute of Reconstructive Surgery which has been teaching doctors from around the globe in up to date surgical methods for more than 35 years.

Guadalajara alone has over 75 certified plastic surgeons and most of the healthcare facilities are 1st rate. Another plus is the culture of care you'll find in Mexico. Unlike most US doctors who appear to always be in an endless rush to get their patients out of their offices, in Mexico doctors spend time listening to their patients' needs and answering to their worries.

The majority of the doctors in Mexico speak at least some English. Many have taken graduate courses or have accomplished their internships and/or residencies in the States. Some are Board Certified by US certification agencies.

In addition to Guadalajara, there are several fine cosmetic surgeons in Mexico City and the northern city of Monterrey. There are many clinics along side the Texas, Arizona and California borders, but there you're taking a larger possibility that the care won't be first rate. If you're considering a border clinic, take extra care in checking out the physicians and the facilities.

In many instances, you could arrange to recuperate in a pleasant facility with round the clock medical care. By the time the majority of the swelling and bruising are under control, you will be all set to return home with your new look.

There is a downside however. One of the reasons US care is so expensive is medical malpractice lawsuits. One of the reasons that Mexican procedures are so cheap is that malpractice is not recognized in Mexico. So, if something does happen, you'll have no alternative. Nevertheless, 1000's of Americans, Canadian and even citizens of South America head to Mexico every year for face lifts and other plastic procedures. I have been residing part time in Mexico for over 9 years and have many friends who've had successful surgeries.

Look at the qualifications of any doctor you're considering carefully, Try to obtain references. If at all possible visit one of these cities in advance so that you can become familiar with the facilities accessible and you can meet with some of the plastic surgeons. If you have some sense of risk and wish to save thousands of dollars on cosmetic plastic surgery, Mexico might be the location for you.
