But the ephemeral waterfalls that occur here are just one of the delights to be found in this small but intriguing state park, which was discovered in the 1880's. It takes 232 steps to walk to the bottom of this 500-foot-wide, 120-foot-deep sinkhole. Each landing reveals a new layer of forest, each crack and crevice a bounty of botanical wonders. The best time to visit is after a heavy rain, when tall waterfalls gush down the sides of the sinkhole. A 0.9-mile trail rings the top of the sinkhole, leading you through habitats very different than what you'll find elsewhere. The hiking in central Florida includes Florida Trail, Ocala National Forest, Tibet-Butler Preserve, Eureka Springs, Disney Wilderness Preserve, Black Hammock Wilderness Area, and Eureka Springs established in 1938, by amateur botanist and world traveler Albert Greenburg. Years later, he started the first tropical fish farm in Florida in the springs, and in 1967 donated the 31-acre site to the county. Construction of the Tampa Bypass Canal ruined the hydrology of the springs, so they rarely ever flow—but the gardens remain. They include the largest publicly owned collection of ferns in Florida, a rose garden, and an orchid room, as well as boardwalks winding through a lush floodplain forest of maples, cypresses, and tupelo. The hiking in south Florida includes Florida Trail, Pahokee to Port Mayaca, Harney Pond Canal Boardwalk, LaBelle Nature Park, and Ortona Mounds.
