Get Hooked On The Game Of Golf

By: M Lindsley

My first time on a golf course was spending an afternoon watching friends hit golf balls. I was appointed as the golf cart driver while they were playing. It seems that beer and golf go well together, since I was not drinking, I was selected as the driver. They all wore golf shoes. Each golfer had their own equipment(golf bag) to carry their clubs, extra golf balls, gloves and tees. Before starting their round of golf, they went to the driving range to practice with various golf clubs and a putter. It was a fun experience. I was hooked that day and have enjoyed playing golf ever since.
Golf, the game, seems to have originated sometime in the mid-eighteenth century when the first known rules of golf were written by gentlemen (golfers) of Leith. The honorable Edinburgh golfers are now based at Royal St. Andrews in Scotland. It is definitely true that the game of golf, as we know it, came from Scotland. The Scottish gentlemen were playing golf in its primitive design-- hitting the ball from starting hole to finishing hole in the fewest number of strokes possible. The golfers made clubs usually fashioned by attaching some type of stone to a stick and balls were leather-covered feathers.
The earliest reference to golf appears to have started in the reign of King James. It seems he complained about his archers playing golf. His men were missing their practice, so he banned the game of golf. Missing work to play a round of golf is still very common today. All the equipment has changed dramatically since its inception. King James III and James IV continued using the ban on golf. The game continued to develop in Scotland over the decades. In the mid 1700 it is believed that the first rules were written and golf is still played by basically the same rules that are now modified every two years. Prior to the late seventeen hundreds there were no specific number of holes in a round of golf and it stayed like that until the early nineteen hundreds at which time the standard that we know today as being eighteen holes added continuity to the game.
The modern day game of golf as we know it remains pretty much the same with the exception of the number of people involved in golf today. A professional golfer named Arnold Palmer is credited with much of the popularity and explosion of golf. Along with the tremendous amount of prize money paid out to the professionals of the golf tour, local charities are the greatest beneficiaries from the professional side of golf. Golf is now a world-wide industry with a large number of professional tournaments from the current Professional Golfers Association, the Champions Tour (for players fifty years and older), several tours for mostly former college players turned professional. There are, also, several ladies professional tournaments.
Modern day technology has been a major factor in the number of people taking up golf. This also carries over into the pro tour players. The equipment is so much better today than just a few years ago. More manufacturers mean more competition and along with everything else, higher prices. All the golf clubs are easier to play with, and most everyone plays at a higher level with better golf clubs and other equipment. I mentioned earlier that I begin playing golf in 1987. Golf is a tremendous sport and virtually anyone can enjoy being outside getting some exercise and age is never a factor. I am seventy three and enjoy playing with the old guys in their 80s. It is also a fun game for the ladies so everyone can go to the golf course.
