GOP balanced spending budget amendment is irresponsible political theater

By: Christopher Roosevelt

GOP senators are proposing a well balanced spending budget amendment to score political points for 2012. Republicans said they would refuse to vote for raising the debt ceiling unless a well balanced spending budget amendment is put up for a vote. Raising the debt ceiling is essential for the U.S. government to meet its obligations. Budget experts of every political persuasion ridicule such an amendment, which would never be anticipated to be ratified.

Possible bill GOP supports

A well balanced budget amendment bill is one that over a dozen senators are supporting. John Cornyn of Texas and Utah's Orrin Hatch wrote the bill together. Even though by 2001 there was a $5.6 trillion government surplus, the Congressional Spending budget Office estimates, because of the 1993 deficit reduction package that Clinton put together, many keep attempting to get a well balanced spending budget amendment passed for instance in 1992, 1995 and 1997. After Bush came into office in 2001, the balanced budget amendment was not important to republicans anymore. Too much money was spent on tax cuts and wars by Congress and the Bush administration. By the fall of 2008, the financial crisis got to its worse while the federal deficit had reached $10 trillion.

Voters determine on balanced budget

Now with a Democrat in the White House, Republicans have dusted off the well balanced budget amendment once again. Even Cornyn admits that forcing Congress to vote on such an amendment that has no chance of being ratified is nothing but political theater. The human Events site quoted Cornyn saying, "Voters would then know, with very stark clarity, which is for a well balanced budget and who is not, and it could have a large impact on the 2012 elections." Republicans try to use blackmail to get this bill passed in congress. The global economic recovery needs the $14.2 trillion cap on the federal debt that has been put in place. In exchange for exceeding it, Republicans say a balanced spending budget amendment needs to be voted on, at the very least.

Even conservatives think the balanced budget amendment is a bad idea

Tax hikes are prohibited in the well balanced budget amendment, which is just one of the many things incorporated. Clinton's Treasury Secretary, Robert Rubin, said that a recession would be much, much worse if something like this were really to occur, which was said the last time the GOP proposed the bill. The well balanced spending budget amendment was called "probably the most reckless action imaginable," by the American Enterprise Institute. The Center on budget and Policy is very liberal. It said that the amendment would take away necessary benefits for instance unemployment. There's a reason only 27 amendments have been made to the U.S. Constitution since it was ratified in 1788. two thirds of the House and U.S. Senate must vote yes, then legislatures from at least 38 states must do the exact same.
