In the past few weeks, I have been busily working to dig up any tried and true remedies for getting lower gas consumption and I discovered something interesting. The tips that actually work to lower gas consumption also save you from having to do unnecessary repairs needing to be done on your car brought on by poor driving habits. If you are not spending hundreds of dollars every year to keep your car under complete a-z warranty or you have a self destructive streak which aberratedly derives sick pleasure from taking your dysfunctional auto for repairs and being held up without a gun with unnecessary repairs needing to be done on your car and having your auto sit for days at the shop while you take public transportation and fret about it like a father-to-be in a hospital waiting room then maybe wish to heed these bits of advice. Saving money on fuel and on repairs needing to be done on your car are cousins. Consider what better things you could do with the dollars that you are wasting on unnecessary repairs . Go on a vacation? Get a better auto? Do some home improvements? Certainly there are better things you can do with your cash than pouring it into your car! In 2006 the average cost of a gallon of gas was $2.14. Today it is $3.1107 across all 50 states. In 2004 the cost of one barrel of oil was $50 and people were pissed. In 2007 the cost of a barrel of oil is $100 and you don’t hear much griping because the broad public have sunk into an attitude of hopelessness. Of course, the rapid devaluation of the dollar also plays a part. It can be noted that while the cost of gas has gone up, the dollar going down has also made the cost of gas seem to go up faster than it actually has. Overall, it is a serious situation for the US economy and gas prices. If you are not waving the white towel and still want to maximize your fuel efficiency and keep as much money as possibly in your wallet and out of the greedy, slimy hands of oil company executives then there are things that you can do. Did you ever see that episode of Star Trek where Kirk, the great captain of the Starship Enterprise beams down to a world that is dramatizing Chicago in the gang era and he is attempting to ”captain” an old style car and master the shifting of gears and somehow accomplishes a short drive down the street with many jumps and starts and lurches? That was not a training manual! My message? Be a smooth driver. Abrupt stops aren't great for your car or your auto's MPG. So anticipate stops whenever you can. Permitting your car wind down to a stop is a good way to lower gas consumption Follow the speed limit. Speeding is a very expensive way to drive. Flying over the maximum permitted speed may get you where you want to go in less time, but it also means more visits to the fuel pump and possibly even a couple to the local traffic court. Oh, and regarding traffic court… be VERY careful about driving around there… that is where all the lousy drivers have to go… that is one reason. Another reason is that the city usually figures that they can give you another traffic citation while you are in the area since you were unlucky to get the first one. They will pull a stunt like having a “no turn on red light” sign in a place that is hard to see and they will jack up the fine. I found just such a trap in Burbank There was a sign that said that violation at that traffic light would be a THREE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLAR fine! Can’t say that these people do not have a sense of humor! Let me share what I found out about driving at higher speeds. Faster driving is going to retard your fuel performance the faster you drive. So the faster you go, the harder the fuel efficiency hit on your vehicle. Driving 75 mph as opposed to 65 mph will retard your fuel performance by ten percent. Driving 70 mph as opposed to 55 mph will lower your retard your fuel performance by EIGHTEEN percent. So stop regarding speed limit signs as advice and slow down. Adhering to the speed limit is the safest and cheapest way to drive. Most other tips are just plain contradictory or wrong... I found several articles that suggest don't use your airconditioner which is not very helpful if you are a resident of or it is 100 degrees in Manhattan! Then I found one article that says to keep the automobile windows open for city driving but to use the AC when you are on the highways because having the windows open while driving at high speeds causes drag which lessens gas mileage. Who's right? Who's wrong? Who cares? Does it lower gas consumption? No, probably not! The most real solution to increase your fuel economy, with fuel prices in the $3-4.50 range during the last year or so is to disconnect your umbilical cord... the one that chains you to the fuel pump and shed your chains of slavery to the oil companies and.... Convert to a hydrogen engine! What if you never had to pump another gallon of gas again? Convert your gas engine to hydrogen. If you do a partial (hybrid) conversion then you can expect improved fuel economy of up to 30% maybe more. If you do this and also add acetone to your gas tank (which will save you another 25% or so) then you will have reduced your gas consumption by a combined 50%! Put in about 2-3 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of gas and less gas will vaporize and you increase your fuel economy by 25% or more. If you do a full gas to hydrogen conversion then you will never have to purchase another gallon of gas for the rest of your life. It is really quite easy, costs next to nothing, doesn't pollute the environment and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to conserve resources instead of consuming more than your fair share.
