Flower Paintings: Not all that or are they?

By: Ian Ashley Howes

Acquiring flower paintings from over seas manufacturers is a subject that on the surface of it could be fairly straight forward straight forward. With large amounts of money regard it as you normally would any financial risk and proceed with the utmost caution. All very straightforward so far, normal business practice. But here things start to take a few turns. If you you are normally purchasing from UK suppliers then you are possibly unaware of the level of risk involved. At the very least you rely upon a common language, local police and if all else
fails the knowledge that there are a host of rules and bodies to help you in getting back your losses.

I'll back track slightly here with an observation. If you are importing to resell then you would have shopped around extensively on the internet to locate the best prices. Your search will undoubtedly have brought overseas suppliers to your attention and the variety of products most appealing.

The places most likely to feature will be Singapore and Indonesia. A great selection and something of a mouth watering start. The most logical thing to do is to start looking through their sites and get some quotations. Still all very manageable. So what is the issue? Well firstly you are only viewing the ones you found on the internet, which means just the ones who have the highest search engine position, unless you went back to page 27.

I personally don't feel comfortable with that selection process, I would rather find the best, most suitable supplier. What I'm after in effect is an independently verified supplier who matches strict criteria. If you are familiar with of pub guide, then you know what is meant if you also try using pub reviews from the web. The issue is of independent reviews, these sellers are salesmen and will possibly make elaborate claims to get your cash.

This is where the web sources such as Alibaba should be able to assist with their gold suppliers etc. Instead they are just simple advertiser which will prioritize listings and therefore number of viewers an ad gets much the same way that Google sells its pay per click ads.

This is where the directories such as Alibaba can be able to help with their gold supplier status etc. Instead they are just another advertising medium which will prioritize listings and therefore number of viewers an advert gets much the same way that major search engines sell its pay per click ads.

So given the fact that it's like the old days of the west out there what can you do? Well at Moko Art we were forced to rely upon traditional intuition and common sense. I disregarded Indonesian suppliers after an awful experience with another venture and after looking at the paintings for sale China seemed the favourite.

It was a very price as well as product driven decision but the actual prices and the supplier had yet to be verified. Many many emails later the field was rapidly narrowing. This is where online messengers comes into its own, a chance to quiz the person and gauge a few character traits. I'll tell you now this didn't work as he pretended to be the business owner but was in fact a simple new farmer turned salesman. The draw of the dollar was enough to make this guy into a raving crook.

This is the big problem cash is king and with poor wages then the opportunity to make a weeks salary off of selling to you means the temptation to lie is massive.

The eventual problems I had were product quality, they fulfilled the order but to a very poor standard. The lowest possible degree of quality. That is where you need to concentrate, find as good a supplier as possible then question your self how do I know what I am going to receive and what can I do about it if it's not what I thought you were buying.
