The human body was designed for vigorous physical activity and evolved over time with movement that meant survival. Our ancestors were active every single day and were forced to engage in physical movement or 'work' to procure food and avoid danger. The vast majority of the existence of the human race has been steeped in the harsh realities of the natural world unlike our modern sedentary, inactive, comfortable and 'easy' lifestyles. But the problem with living this way is that it goes hand in hand with killer chronic modern lifestyle diseases. This means we give ourselves heart disease, cancer, diabetes and dozens of other unpleasant health conditions by our enjoyment of being sedentary. Living this unhealthy lifestyle of too many sugary and fatty foods, not exercising, being overweight and high stress levels from our 'busyness' promotes the onset of these nasty killers along with diminished mental and emotional health. This impacts the lives of millions of people around the world and in the US alone causes seven out of ten deaths and consumes $2 out of every $3 spent on health (sickness) care. Being inactive allows dangerous fat to accumulate around major organs deep inside the body that release harmful chemicals that lead to disease. The transfer of oxygen and nutrients from the blood stream to the cells is hampered and key hormones for optimal health are not released without the stimulation of vigorous muscular activity. Cells and tissues are not repaired and renewed and instead degenerate, decay and become susceptible to disease. This is precisely what is happening and 400 million people around the world are predicted to die within the next ten years of preventable disease. Any wonder that the greatest fear people have is being inflicted with a chronic disease. They are more afraid of that than financial debt or losing a loved one. You would think with this fear they would be taking care of business - their own self care so they are not one of the statistics. But 8 out of 10 people do not exercise and two thirds of us are overweight so the message does not appear to be getting through. The solution is all about prevention and by following a simple lifestyle that contains 2-3 sessions each week of proper strength training exercise and ditching as much processed food from your diet as possible is what it takes. How hard is that really? Such a small outlay of time and effort to keep our body strong right through our adult years is the key for the reduction of disease risk and optimal physical, mental and emotional health. We are after not only length of life but quality of life and that means a much higher level than 'not being sick'. Proper exercise and healthy eating is crucial to balance important hormones that keep our blood sugar and fat levels in the normal range and ensure our cells get the necessary life enhancing oxygen and nutrients from our blood. These most basic factors create a ripple effect of positive health benefits that radiate outwards to every system and process in the human body. The impact of this 'fitness medicine' is both healing and preventive and is the self-health care that only you can give yourself that will regenerate your body and rekindle your spirit. Grab some for yourself and add years to your life and life to your years.
