Finding Clues to the Early Onset of Impairments

By: Mary Harper

There was a lot of commotion at a clinic for speech and hearing last Monday. Examinations were conducted by speech clinicians and hearing technicians for twenty five children to see if there was any speech or hearing problems. With the help of a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist 537 children from various preschools were given similar screenings. Of this 61 were recommended for hearing re screening and 86 for speech re screening.

The tests conducted in the various private preschool programs, and the follow up tests in the clinic either verified normal speech and hearing or indicated a need for further testing. When a person is still young, this is when the director of the hearing and speech clinic believes that detection of hearing and speech problems need to be done in order to prevent the cases from worsening into handicaps. A model for language and speech development applies to everyone and they are not looking for perfect skills in children on the preschool level, but they want to see if these children have been able to match the standard one way or another, because falling behind may lead to serious problems later on in life.

Because of the program, they were able to detect problems that can now be provided with the necessary treatment before the children grow older. Some of the children had parents that expressed too much anxiety about their hearing and speech, according to a volunteer worker. A project like this has its rewards in the form of being able to inform a parent that a child is free from problems.

For this volunteer program, it began after on volunteer trained a fellow volunteer in the techniques used for hearing examinations. There were different nursery and kindergarten schools that were contacted by these two ladies in order to set up screening dates for these schools. All children receive a hearing test and all those whom the teacher had some concern were screened in speech and language usage. Those who did not pass the tests or who were absent that day were invited through correspondence with the parents to attend the clinic at a certain location for a re screening.

In each case when the child did not respond to sound stimuli presented, or did not use the speech sounds, sentence structures or speech vocabulary expected of his age level, the patient is advised as to a recommended course of action. The evaluations resulted in a number of referrals and some suggestions for home management. Possible treatment options were suggested to some other than receive further testing.

For the children who may have some speech and hearing problems, the local speech and hearing clinic provides a comprehensive assessment that runs from two to three hours. From a home program, to a weekly group or individual session, to a daily intensive program for preschoolers, there are options to choose from should treatment be called for after the results of the assessments arrive.

At this point in their lives, children at the preschool level are not exposed to anything that would harm their development regardless of what happens at this point because these are not only preventive but therapeutic in nature. Waiting for screenings are six preschool classes and parents are still awaiting the release of the new schedule for the second batch of rescreening so that they can make the necessary appointment calls.
