A hurricane is severe tropical storm that can form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Fortunately for us, scientists can now predict hurricanes; however, people who live in coastal communities should still be prepared with a plan in case they are ever caught in one. Hurricane preparedness means having the basic keys to survival including fresh water, shelter, food, and warmth. You should also have a Grab-N-Go 72-hour kit in the case you are in the path of the storm.What to Do Before a Hurricane Make sure you listen for information and instructions on television or the radio. If a hurricane watch is issued, you have 24-36 hours before the hurricane hits land. Secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors & check with your local city regarding your evacuation routes.• Get together with family members to talk about what needs to be done. Make sure everyone knows where to meet and who to call (recommended someone out of state) in case you are separated from one another.• If you have a car, keep a half tank of gas in it at all times in case you need to evacuate.Dealing with the AftermathAfter the storm stay in your shelter until local authorities say it is okay to leave. If you have had to evacuate, do not return until your local authorities say it is okay to return. Once you have returned to your house, if it was affected by the hurricane you will need to talk with your children about what has happened and how they can help during the recovery. Being involved will help them deal with the situation.
