The Miami MetroZoo has grown to become one of the best zoos in America, if not the world. One of the biggest advantages that the zoo has is its climate, which allows it to care for creatures from as far afield as Australia, Asia and Africa. The emphasis here is on keeping things as natural as possible, so the animals are not caged in at all. They live on vast stretches of land, with moats separating groups of animals that would endanger one another. The zoo specialises in caring for endangered species, among which they have the addux and baby black rhino. But the star of the show is their elephantine creative genius, an elephant who loves to paint, and has her very own easel. One of the new attractions at MetroZoo is the Samburu Giraffe Feeding Station. For a mere $2 you can scale the station and be at head-height with one of the giraffes, allowing you to feed them. The zoo is also home to the Wings of Asia Aviary, the largest open air aviary in the United States of America. It houses a staggering 300 rare bird species, many of which are critically endangered. As well as witnessing the splendour of the animals in their natural surroundings, the Zootroupia group also perform shows around the zoo at various times throughout the day. Check the MetroZoo website for full show details. The size of MetroZoo, 740 acres in total, means that to get around the zoo you have to do a lot of walking, so wear some sensible shoes. You can also take the lazy way and hire one of their two to four seater bikes for an extra charge at the gate. A great place to bring the kids, not least for the animal attractions, the zoo also hosts a variety of child-oriented activities that will keep children of all ages entertained. And in the hot weather there are plenty of shaded areas and water fountains at which the whole family can cool themselves.
