Exploring The Ukaguru Mountains

By: Gen Wright

Perhaps there is no other place that offers the best of both worlds than Africa. From the grand mountain ranges to spellbinding beaches; Africa offers more than what the eyes can see. It may be the rich heritage or the wildlife that makes Africa one of the most visited place in the whole wide world.

Although this beautiful continent consists of a number of different countries, each of these countries offers a rich culture and a diverse flora and fauna collection. In fact, some of the world's rarest flora and fauna specie can be found only in certain parts of Africa. Most primate and endemic species are indigenous to specific regions in this part of the world.

For wildlife and wild park enthusiasts, one of the most highly recommended places to visit in Africa is Tanzania. Tanzania is a country in Northeast Africa which is bounded by Uganda and Kenya on the North; Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi on the West; Malawi, Mozambiquet, and Zambia on the North; and the Indian Ocean on the East.

Its unique geography produces some of the world's most spellbinding views and sceneries. This is probably the reason why Tanzania is home to a number of National Parks and wildlife reserves. In fact, wildlife reserves cover 25% of the country's total land area. These wild parks and reserves serve as habitats to some of the world's largest populations of wildlife.

One of the attractions of Tanzania is the magnificent Eastern Arc Mountain Range. This mountain range is estimated to be at least 100 million years old and hosts an amazing array of biodiversity. In fact, this part of Tanzania contains over 90% of the plant and animal species. Thus, an African safari is never complete without a trek to the Eastern Arc Mountain Range.

The Eastern Arc Mountain Range consists of many different blocks including the Uluguru, Udzungwa, and Ukaguru mountains among others. These mountains are all part of the Eastern Arc Range and are located in Tanzania. Despite the fact that these mountains offer a wide variety of fauna and flora, little tourism activity is manifested because of the remoteness of these areas.

However, many naturalists find the Ukaguru Mountains worth all the trouble. Aside from the fact that this panoramic view is literally a raised plateau that nestles in the shadow of the taller Uluguru Mountain, it is home to some of the world's largest and rarest bird species. While the climax vegetation is generally categorized as moist vegetation, it has a lower canopy and less diversity than forest.

Thus if you want to experience stunning views of cloud-capped mountains and stunted trees, the Ukaguru Mountains is just about the perfect place for you. Moreover, if you want to immerse yourself in some of the world's most spectacular natural vegetation, the only way to do it is by experiencing the Ukaguru Mountains.
