Experience Washington

By: Roberto Raffa

America’s capital has wide boulevards and avenues, numerous parks and open spaces, elegant colonial houses, marble monuments, impressive stately architecture and a truly cosmopolitan atmosphere making it a fitting city for the most powerful leader on the planet.

The National Mall and Constitution Gardens is where you will find the greatest collection of sights and attractions. This beautiful open area of the city is home to the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic or afternoon stroll.

To feel that power that Washington exudes you need to walk up The Mall to Capitol Hil. Here is the US Capitol Building, the White House and the Supreme Court.

All located within the same area are the Gallery of Art, Air and Space Museum, National Natural History Museum, the Holocaust Museum, the International Spy Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Make sure you give each one an equal amount of your time.

Even though all of these must-do sights are located right on top of each other, you will need more than just a few days to properly do them justice.

Georgetown has grand, attractive colonial homes, boutiques and restaurants and some of the capital’s best nightlife; it is the up-market area of the city.

For funky shops and ethnic stores and awesome live music venues head north to the Adams-Morgan district. It has some fantastic restaurants that are far more affordable than in Georgetown or central areas.

Summertime is a perfect time to visit Washington, particularly over the 4th of July. American Independence Day in Washington means that the city is overrun with parades, street parties and barbeques. The piece de la resistance is the huge fireworks display over Potomac River and an orchestral concert on Capitol Hill at the end of the day.

If you want to dance the night away the Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle areas have some of the best clubs and bars attracting world-famous DJs and the DC party set. If you want a little more sophistication then catch some live jazz at Shaws on U Street and 14th and blues Alley in Georgetown.
