The Mermaid Parade Now an official part of every Brooklyn summer is the totally wacky Mermaid Parade. Starting at Coney Island, people gather dressed in mermaid costumes and celebrate the start of summer. Everyone parades to the beach for a summer swim. These days the parade is usually led by a celebrity or two. In the past Quenn Latifah has been there, as have David Byrne and Moby. This festival is just too unique to miss. The Brooklyn Carnival Brookyn celebrates Caribbean-American culture every year with this huge carnival featuring, floats, extravagant costumes, dancers and live music, as well as delicious food from all of the various islands of the Caribbean. It takes place every Labor Day, and parades from Rochester Avenue to the Grand Army Plaza. Attracting two million visitors annually, there are sure to be big crowds, but the atmosphere is so great and lively that you will feel right at home. Live performers are always stationed out in front of the Brooklyn Library en route too. Sakuri Matsuri From late March to early April through to mid-May, the grounds of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is home to a spectacular sight. Blossoms from its huge collection of cherry blossom trees carpet the grounds, and this festival celebrates this and Japanese cultures as a whole. A trip to Washington Avenue will find you at the home of this cherry blossom celebration that has been taking place for the past twenty five years. It explores all things Japanese and is based on the Japanese tradition known as Hanami.
