So you’re looking to buy a cover for your swimming pool. First determine what your primary objectives are, such as children’s safety, cleanliness, or heat retention. With the various types and varieties available nowadays you’ll want to learn the basics about each type before making a final decision. The three main types available are winter covers, safety covers and solar covers. Winter covers, in spite of their name, can be used throughout the year for the purpose of reducing water evaporation and preventing debris like leaves and branches from entering your pool and causing damage and stains. They’re most often made of polyethylene or mesh-like material. While some have a solid tarp-like appearance, preventing everything from entering the pool, others contain minute holes which permit rain and snow to drip through. The disadvantage of choosing a tarp-like winter cover is that it may require a pumping system at the end of the winter when you’re ready to re-open the pool or if the weight of the water and snow on top becomes excessive. One practical solution is to place a leaf net on top of the winter cover so as to separate the leaf debris from the water, thereby facilitating the re-opening process. Safety covers are designed to prevent children and animals from accidentally falling into the pool. As such, they are designed to be strong and protective. Some are made of solid material but most are made of durable mesh fabric that’s been netted or braided. Safety covers must be able to support a great deal of weight and be securely fastened down. A safety cover is only as strong as its fastening system, so it’s essential you have enough decking around your pool to accommodate a proper fastening system. A proper fastening system also fulfills the purpose of preventing someone from sliding underneath the cover and into the pool. Solid safety covers made of strong vinyl with mesh openings for drainage are also available, but they may require a pump system to remove excess water. Mesh is often a more practical choice since it’s strong, durable and requires no pumping system. Solar pool covers, on the other hand, serve two purposes: they capture solar energy in order to heat your pool and minimize evaporation. Usually, solar covers contain air pockets or bubbles that absorb solar energy and transfer it to your pool. They’re typically made of a synthetic polyethylene material and, under the right conditions, can increase water temperature by 10 to 15 degrees. Solar covers can also help the water retain heat during cool nights by acting as an insulator. They can save you money by reducing your water usage and reducing the energy used by your pool heater.
