Everything You Need to Know about Tires

By: Lisa5 Cryder5

Tires are one of the most important parts of your car. Consider this – tires are the vehicle’s single link to the road surface. A powerful engine, sophisticated transmission or elaborate suspension system mean nothing if your car tires are no good. As tire technology continues getting better, the importance of tires will increase. Already, good tires can do wonders for a sub-par vehicle.

We all know how difficult it can be to shop for new car tires. Here are a few tips to take to your autodealer to make the process easier for you and for the dealer!

If you are replacing tires on a new car, you have several options. If you are satisfied with the performance of your previous tires, you can simply purchase the same size and make that came with the car. This is the easiest option, but in some cases it may not be the best. Consider how you drive the car and what kind of weather conditions you regularly experience on the road. It may be worthwhile to upgrade your car tires to a higher quality or to improve handling in dry or wet conditions. All these tires can be found in the same size as your original ones, so there is no need to be concerned that you could be saddled with large or small tires that do not fit your car.

When it is clear you are ready for new tires, there are several things you can do to make the decision easier before you visit the autodealer. Start by evaluating your driving uses and expected needs. Once you have a good concept of how you use your car and how you plan to use it in the future, communicate that information to your service advisor at the autodealer. The more information you can give the service advisor, the better chance you will get tires that fit your needs. When you are working with the dealership, expect your service advisor to ask you questions about tread life, handling and typical driving conditions.
If you are considering changing the look of your tires or wheels entirely, this may be the perfect opportunity to do so. Wheel sizes work on plus sizing. Essentially, if your current wheel measures 16 inches, a 17 inch wheel would be a “plus one”, an 18 inch wheel would be a “plus two” and so on.

Remember, tires can wear out, but your wheels will not. As with any other car accessories, changing wheel size can be a purely aesthetic decision, but there are several advantages. Increasing the size of your wheel can improve the performance and appearance of your vehicle. For example, shorter sidewalls can increase steering response, while wheels with a large diameter will better maintain the overall diameter of the tire. A tire that maintains its shape better will keep changes in the odometer and speedometer negotiable.

Alloy is another option you will be presented when you are shopping for new wheels. A good quality alloys will have a number of benefits for your car. Perhaps the most important benefit – it can better reduce the unsprung weight when compared to steel wheels. Unsprung weight is the portion of the car that is not supported by the suspension and is most susceptible to road shock and cornering forces. Reducing unsprung weight provides more precise steering input and improved cornering. Alloys offer better brake cooling as well. The metals are excellent heat conductors and will improve heat deflection. Some tires are even specially designed to allow cool air to flow over brake calipers and rotors.

Considering today’s technology, it is difficult to purchase truly poor wheels. While, like tires, some are better quality than others, there are so many good wheels available you are likely to have several possibilities from which to choose. If you consider your needs and wants, then factor in budgetary restrictions, you will be able to find a good set of wheels for your car.
