Enjoy the ocean without the sand

By: Nicholas Ayres

Don’t you just love to go to the beach an play in the surf? Spending some very valuable time with your family enjoying the outdoors, can bring hours (or even days) of pleasure to everyone. But, for all of the fun that the beach brings, it also brings the dreaded sand in the swimsuit. Many water parks worldwide have figured out how to bring the surf to you, but leave out the sand. Wave Pools have become increasingly more popular for the experience of the ocean without the discomfort.

Wave pool design is really quit simple. They have many components and moving parts, but the operation of the pool is pretty basic. Waves can be produced in smaller pool by using strong bursts of air to make a disturbance. This is much like what occurs naturally in the ocean. A pump placed in the deeper section of the pool will push air into the water creating a “ripple effect”. this type of pool is generally used in children’s wading pools. For larger more intense waves, a much different source of water disturbance is employed. In place of air, water is pushed into the pool. A large amount of water is forced into the pool suddenly, which will raise the water level. This will create a larger disturbance through the pool, and the produce larger waves. The pool is designed to automatically re-establish a pre-set water level. The extra water is pushed out of the pool into a collection canal. The water then goes through a series of filters and pumps and returns to the deep end of the pool. The water in a wave pool is constantly being circulated through the system. This is an ideal design for Australian water parks, as the water is recycled and waste is kept to a minimum. A wave pool requires several pieces of equipment to operate: it will need a water pump, a collection pool, several release valves, a slanted pool, and a return canal. Because the majority of the moving parts are located in the return canal, the canal is required to be fenced off in order to prevent anyone from having access to the canal.

On any given day, the volume of bathers that use a wave pool can number in the thousands. Contaminates such as perspiration, suntan oil, sun block, and yes, “accidents”, make keeping a wave pool clean, a challenge. The filtration system will need to be in operations at all times.

When you and your family are spending the day at the water park, it is very important that everyone follows all of the posted rules. Your safety, and that of your family is the number one concern, just remember that it is your responsibility, too. Do not force anyone to participate in any water activity that they are not completely comfortable with.
