Ebook Marketing: Do You Need to Build An Opt-in Email List?

By: Johnny Jones

Many ebook marketers agree that having a carefully thought out business plan is critical to their success. And that plan is there because it helps the business owner to navigate: more specifically, the business plan is, in a sense, a map to finding customers.

So when we are talking about how to make money with ebooks, one dimension of that is growing the number of customers. The more customers we get, the more profit we get.

But it is not only customers that we are looking for. We are in search a particular type of customers, namely those who also are pleased with out products, and as a result of that, will be returning to buy new products or services from us.

In other words, it is not just enough, to get some quick sales and some one-time customers; we also must plan for the future, so that we may end up with happy customers that are to purchase again.

What Are Your Plans for Those Who Visit Your Site or Blog?

Now let us turn to your blog or site. Let us assume that you already have traffic to your site. Hundreds of visitors come to your site every day. The question is: When new visitors come to your site, what do you do with them? Can they come to "window-shop" and leave without doing anything? Or are you counting on them to buy something? What happens if they don't buy anything?

The question, in other words, is this: Can you afford to let non-buying visitors go? And, even more essential, can you afford to let buying visitors go? After all, since they have already proved that they are disposed to buy from you, why not construct a marketing system to cater to those users?

Unless your uncle owns Google, all traffic you get has cost you something, either in money or time. So why let your visitors escape if you can stop it? And you can stop it, to a large degree, by using one or several opt-in lists.

You will not only make more money, but you will also serve your clients better. They will sign up to your e-mail list and take part of your emails. And when they gradually get more and more convinced that they want to buy from you, they will one day (usually later than sooner) do so.

The Optin List: Seeing Our Ebook Business Plan In Action

The foremost idea of this article is the following: by investing some time and money in preparing a professional opt-in list with which you can build a list of potential customers, your ebook business will thrive. By being able to continuously track new customers that are added to the list, we will thus see, with our own eyes, that our e-book business plan is working.

The argument can, of course, be made that we don't need an opt-in email list of potential customers to verify that our business model is working. After all, these people are not necessarily the real customers anyway, since they have not necessarily purchased anything yet. So it is no indication of that our ebook marketing plan is working. If there are no sales yet, what good is it for? So a better indication of that our business plan is working would be to merely look at the sales figures: if there is more sales, then it is working; if there isn't, it's not.

Our answer may be this. It is correct that the actual sales figure is the most tangible evidence that the business plan is working right now. However, the e-mail opt-in list can tell us about the future, and in that sense it is a measurement about whether our business is continuing to work, or whether our destiny is another. For it is reasonable to expect, especially if the number of subscribers on your list is substantial (say a thousand or more), that there is a strong statistical correlation between the number of subscribers on your list and your future sales.

If we can recognize this as true, then an increasing number of prospective customers signing up to our e-mail list would, indeed, be a sign of that our business model is working, and that we are on the right track to making more money. The force of the list lies therefore not mainly in the idea that it is a measure of the current sales, but that it is a measure of what our sales figures are going to be in the near future.

Email Optin Lists: Also Good For Customer Behaviour Analysis

But email lists are not solely about getting an estimate of how your future sales is going to be. One may also use them in different ways to understand your customers better.

One way to do that is to be careful to note the time at which the customer signed up. If you have just had an AdWords advertising campaign, and you detect that the customer signed up two hours after you launched the campaign, and six hours before you stopped that campaign, you may conclude, with the help of other analytic information, that this person opted in to your optin list as a direct result of your advertising. So he was attracted to the offer that you presented in your campaign.

Another way to use the optin email list sign-up information to understand your potential customers better is to place different sign-up forms in different locations on your website. When the user signs up, you can then track from which form he signed up. This may tell you more about his interests and personality. Also, it may tell you something about which forms work best, and by doing so, it may give information about how to tweak your website.

List Building Is Excellent Ebook Marketing

In essence, then, opt-in e-mail list building is a must for the serious ebook marketer. By using the optin email list, the marketer can repeatedly send messages to the subscribers and continuously offer new advise, tips, and information that may not only educate the reader but also build trust. So when the trust is there, in conjunction with the right product, there is sales.
