E-book Marketing: Do You Really Need to Have An Email List?

By: Johnny Jones

Many ebook business owners intuitively understand the value of a properly laid out business plan. In fact, without such a plan many feel that they are lost. For the idea behind it is to constantly support the business owner to expand his business. In other words, it is a map how to find new customers.

So on the topic of making money with ebooks, we are almost certainly talking about an increasing number of customers (although other factors may be there also). For the more customers we can get, the more profit we will be able to obtain.

But it is not only customers that we are looking for. We are in search a specific type of customers, namely those who also are pleased with out products, and as a consequence of that, will be returning to buy new products or services from us.

So it is not sufficient, as seen from a long-term business standpoint, to have completed some sales and having some new customers; we also need to take care of our already existing customers and recommend them new products and services.

What Are You Doing With Those Who Visit Your Web Site?

Now let us look at your web site or blog. If we assume that you have lots of traffic to your web site, what do you do with your visitors? Do you let them get away with not buying any ebook from you, and never return to your site? Or do you have some method of knowing who they are?

The question, in other words, is this: Can you afford to let non-buying visitors go? And, even more essential, can you afford to let buying visitors go? After all, since they have already demonstrated that they are prepared to buy from you, why not construct a marketing system to cater to those users?

Unless your uncle owns Google, all traffic you get has cost you something, either in money or time. So why let your visitors run away if you can stop it? And you can stop it, to a large degree, by using one or several opt-in lists.

This way, you will also let your potential customers in control: they sign up and listen to your email messages; and when they are truly confident that they can trust buying from you, they will (usually later than sooner) buy from you.

The Opt-in List: Our Ebook Business Plan In Action

So my suggestion is this. The most intelligent thing to do, from a business point of view, is to invest some time in preparing an opt-in list for your company. By collecting email addresses we are, so to speak, building a map of the territory and our customers. In other words, this list of potential customers may be seen as real proof that our ebook marketing plan is working.

The argument can, of course, be made that we don't need an email opt-in list of potential customers to verify that our business model is working. After all, these people are not necessarily the real customers anyway, since they have not necessarily picked up anything yet. So it is no indication of that our ebook business plan is working. If there are no sales yet, what good is it for? So a better indication of that our business plan is working would be to just look at the sales figures: if there is more sales, then it is working; if there isn't, it's not.

Although the above objection may have some truth to it, let me say this. It is true that prospective customers do not necessarily indicate the amount of the current sales; as for current sales, the sales figure alone is the best measure. However, as is known from statistical analysis of sales figures and prospective customers, it is reasonable to expect that there is a certain percentage of those who have signed up for the opt-in email list that eventually, in the future, will become buyers, and perhaps even be returning buyers.

If we can accept that argument, then it would be fair say that an increasing number of subscribers would show that our business model is working even in the near future, and that we are on track to making even more money. In other words, the list is not chiefly a measure of current sales (for that is measured by the actual sales figures), but a measure of what our sales figures are going to be in the future.

Optin Lists: Also Good For Customer Tracking

So by setting up one or several email lists you may boost your sales and simultaneously getting a better picture of what lies ahead for your company. But opt-in lists are not just about immediate sales or sales projects either. They may also be used to increase your understanding of your customers.

One way to use the email optin list sign-up information to understand your potential customers better is to note the date and time when they signed up. This may be significant for different reasons. One example may be that you just have launched a special AdWords advertising campaign, and you observe that the sign-up happened when that advertising campaign was live. By investigating also other aspects on the site, with for example Google Analytics, you may conclude that this, indeed, was a result of your AdWords campaign. By investigating all such occurences, you may get a nice picture of whether or not your ebook advertising campaign was successful.

Another way to analyze information from the opt-in procedure may be the following. Let us say that you have different types of opt-in forms on different pages of your site. So when the visitor signs up, you can right away see which page and form he has used. This may tell you more about this customer's preferences and interests. Also, this information may be gathered from many customers sign-ups, which then may be compiled to a report on which forms work the best -- statistics which in turn may be used to redesign or tweak certain aspects of your website.

List Building Is Excellent E-book Marketing

In essence, then, email list building is a must for the serious ebook marketer. By using the email list, the marketer can repeatedly send messages to the subscribers and continuously offer new advise, tips, and information that may not only educate the reader but also build trust. So when the trust is there, in conjunction with the right product, there is sales.

This piece offers the point of view that it certainly is essential to have and take care of an e mail list for your e book businesses. Considering the fact that most site visitors do not buy any products or services the first time they check-out a new web page, the optin list gradually makes the prospects build reliance in the web site and its products.
