Do You Need a Tea Set or Collection?

By: Sandra M. Morris

The simple answer is yes if you are at all involved with tea functions such as tea social, tea parties or if you just want to have a "special" luncheon with your girl friends.

Previous generations were more inclined to have tea socials than the current generations of today. Often a young girl was first introduced to tea parties during play sessions. As she began to mature older relatives would give a tea cup as a gift for birthdays or special occasions. The practice of giving tea cups, tea pots and serving accessories actually becomes a hobby for the young woman and will be items she will cherish in her senior years. Most can tell you who gave them which piece of porcelain and for what occasion.

It should also be noted that many of the collections are passed from Mother to Daughter over the centuries. Those English Bone China or Tea Sets become heirlooms that are prized by all and they often hold places of honor for showing them to guests.

How can you tell the difference between a coffee cup and its cousin a tea cup? The easiest way is just by looking at the - a tea cup will appear much more delicate or fragile than its cousin the coffee cup. Another quick give away is that the tea cups handle is placed higher on the side of the cup. And finally the tea cups always come with a matching saucer. Not so with coffee.

Starting a new family tradition can be both exhilarating and caring at the same time. Tea cups and saucers range in a broad category and we will begin to learn about the different types in our next travel stop.
