Do You Have Contents Insurance?

By: Frank Dobbs

Everyone that owns a car or a house knows that they should have an insurance policy for it, in fact, many times these insurances are required either by law or by the lender. But even if it was not required, it is the only way to protect your investment, especially if that investment is a house. However, did you know that there is more than just insuring the buildings on your property? For instance, when you purchase home insurance you can not only take out buildings insurance but also contents insurance.

Buildings insurance is the one type that is required by most all mortgage companies out there today. What this type of insurance does is protect the shell of the building like the roof and walls, but also the permanent fixtures on the inside like your kitchen or your fixed wardrobes against any damages that may incur. For example, if a fire destroys your home your buildings insurance will pay you the cost of rebuilding your home. But is your home just a shell?

When you think about home insurance you should also be thinking of what is inside your home. If there were to be a fire it would not only destroy the outer shell of the home but also all the contents that you have worked so hard to get. All too often people do not think of these things and although they will be extremely grateful that their home will be rebuilt, they will have to find a way to reinvest in all their furniture. Is that a loss that you can afford to take?

Let’s take a look at just what your home insurance contents policy would include. First of all this type of policy will cover everything from your furniture to your colour television and more. And what’s more, no matter how old your contents are you will have them replaced old for new, with the exception of clothing and linens. You may be surprised if you calculate all that you have in your home just how big of a number you would come up with. In addition, to buy all of this new would be almost impossible as it had taken you quite some time to put it all together. And this is what your home insurance contents policy is for.

Even if you take some of those contents out of your home like your mobile phone or your pedal cycle, your contents insurance will cover them against theft or damage. How often have you gotten out of work only to find that someone stole your cycle? Shouldn’t you also feel just as safe when you walk out of your home as you do inside? There is nothing like the feelings of the peace of mind that having the right home insurance brings to you. And although this may sound like a greetings card, you will be just as happy as one can make you when you stop out of that pedal cycle shop with a brand new cycle.
