The mention of the Detroit Tigers doesn't always incite people to chorus or get the masses rushing to their feet to cheer but fans and loyal supporters who wouldn't trade their Detroit Tigers for the world will tell you that this team gets respect and props for staying in the game throughout history. Established as one of the original franchises to enter into the national arena of baseball, the Detroit Tigers were officially founded in 1894. Affectionately known as "The Bengals", the Detroit Tigers have kept their same name from the start until today. Navy blue, white and orange are the team's colors. Members of the American League from 1901 until today and the Central Division from 1998 until now, the Detroit Tigers are longstanding members of the baseball community and have retired numbers 2, 5, 6, 16, 23 and 42. Perhaps one of the most memorable moments in the history of the Detroit Tigers was their World Series victory in 1984. The city went into a riot mode after the unexpected victory. It became the era of the Detroit Tigers known as "Bless You Boys", a slogan featured in commercials, advertisements and billboards everywhere in the Detroit metropolitan area. Few make mention of the Detroit Tigers without associating some credit to the soothing voice of Ernie Harwell who delivered play by play announcements for all of the Detroit Tigers' games from 1960 to 2002. A statue in Comerica Park honors Harwell. To date, the Detroit Tigers have won four World Series titles in 1935, 1945, 1968 and the aforementioned 1984. A true testament to their will and perseverance, the Detroit Tigers have made it to the World Series six times; in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1934, 1940 and 2006. Many season records have been accomplished by the Detroit Tigers over the years. In 1911, Ty Cobb set the highest batting average at .420. That same year, Cobb also achieved the most runs with 147. And if those records were not enough, Cobb also scored the most hits that same year with 248. Cobb later scored the most stolen bases in 1915 with 96. Most recently Todd Jones had 42 saves in 2000. In 1971, Mickey Lolich had 308 strikeouts. Sam Crawford had the most triples with 26 in 1914. Hank Greenberg scored the most home runs with 58 in 1938. Greenberg also had the most doubles prior to that time with 63 in 1938. Greenberg also had the most RBIs with 183 in 1937. The home of the Detroit Tigers has been Boulevard Park from 1894-95, Burns Park from 1901-02, Bennett Park from 1896-1911, Tiger Stadium from 1912-99 and Comerica Park since 2000. Brief stints were at Brigg Stadium from 1938-60 and Navin Field from 1912-38. Located in downtown Detroit at 2100 Woodward Avenue is Comerica Park; an open air ballpark that provides a beautifully landscaped backdrop of the city's downtown business district for the Detroit Tigers games and other exciting events. Named after Comerica Bank, one of the park's corporate sponsors that was located in the downtown area in the past, Comerica Park has a seating capacity of 41,782 and a grass playing surface. A 15 foot tiger statue welcomes fans at the main entrance. Statues of Al Kaline, Hal Newhouser, Greenberg, Cobb, Charlie Gehringer and Willie Horton are in the concourse at left center field. There are 33 tiger heads along the brick walls on the outside of the park. Each head has a lighted baseball in its mouth. A Ferris wheel with 12 baseball shaped cars and a carousel are situated in the northwest corner of the ballpark and is a favorite of fans both young and old.
